Title: Cruise Upgrade Again
Post by: Chopsdad on 03 November 2006, 22:37:54
Ok I'll keep it simple.

1. Fitted new stalk from Leavalleymotors
2. VX mechanic enabled system & confirmed stalk functions ok
3. Tunnie sent me a clutch swich
4. Fitted switch today

Q. Why won't it work????? :'( :-[

You might need a 4 wire brake pedal switch.

At what speed are you trying to enable it? - Remember it won't work below 20 mph generally... although the lowest i got mine to work was 16mph.

Sorry to ask, but are you pressing the right button? The bit with the bubble bit sticking out?

Brake pedal already has switch fitted & wired.

And yes I am pressing the bubble - I even read the hand book to check.

Tried at 40+ just to be on the safe side but still no joy.

Hummm odd it should work.

Just to check the switch i sent you was brand new, did you remove that red bit of plastic?

No?  I removed the green bit and pushed the red bit into the metal frame to secure the switch.

Should I remove the red bit?

trying to remember what it looks like, but the switch should have the freedom to move, iic you remove the red bit of plastic....

If you hold the switch at tap the bottom of it, it should move up and down..

It does.  The red collar is situated behind the plunger (mushroom) all the way around and moves into the switch body when depressed but does not move back out.  There was also a green part that only covered 1/4 of the circumference and prevented the plunger from moving - i've binned this bit ro allow free movement.

The switch looks fine and the connector is firmly attached and I've tried it both ways round just in case of polarity preferences.

I'm stumped.

I am as well!

Not much more i can suggest really... unless anyone else has any ideas?

Ok....way to test the switch is working ok......remove the connector and short the pins together on the wire.

If cruise then works ok......summat wrong with the switch....if still doesnt work....then take it back to vx dealer.....they appear not to have enabled cruise.....which wouldnt suprise me in the slightest!

Good point... if the dealer showed you the responses to the stalk working then that does not mean it is enabled.

He may have just shown you the display where it tests the buttons... on/off ect.... it may still not be enabled.

My money's on dealer 'misunderstanding'.

You can test the stalk itself with a multimeter of course.

Just to clarify, i was assuming stalk works ok.....by switch i meant clutch switch that Tunnie sent to chopsdad  :y

Thanks boys I'll short the pins & let you know.

Was the cruise stalk the correct one?  For your 2.2, the little loom which plugs into 4 pin connector should have 4 wires.  If it has less, they given you wrong stalk.

I've shorted out the pins and it doesn't work. :(

I'm off to check the number of wires - the doner car was a Vectra 2.2 according to the tippex written on it when it arrived so could be something wrong there.

4 wires. Blue, green, red & grey.

Looks like I'll be back to grease some palms at VX on Saturday afternoon.

Is there any technical info re the exact progamme to run on the Tech2 that I can take with me?  Seems they didn't get it right last time.

Thanks

Fire up Tech2
Pick Diagnostics
Select year
Select car
Select Engine, and pick the correct engine type
Turn ignition on when prompted, and press confirm
Select 'Program Variant'
Top option should now say Cruise Control, and it will say Enabled if it is enabled.
If not enabled, press modify, highlight Cruise Control and press enter until it says Enabled, then press program and follow the prompts.

But I would like to think the dealer knows this....

Thanks - I hope so too but it didn't work last time - maybe because the clutch switch wasn't in place?

Already spoken to the garage today & sorted for Saturday to run program on Tech2.

That's all for now - I'll update the saga at the weekend.  :y

The fitting instructions for brake switches are:

Hold brake pedal depressed (stick to seat or something heavy on pedal)
Fit to bracket and press red retaining latch fully in.
Remove green collar, then slowly raise brake pedal to its fully-up position. (this sets a ratchet adjustment in the switch to set the operating point)

I wonder if the switch got pushed in during assembly and so is signalling 'brake pedal down' all the time because its adjustment is now wrong.....but I would have thought this would affect brake lights also.

You wouldn't bloody believe it but it works  :) :) :)

Took it apart last night to check the wires & reassembled & just for fun I pushed the button today and hey presto the car drives as if by magic.

I wondered why the clutch switch had a green insert to prevent it being depressed but looks like it has the same ratchet function as the brake switch mentioned by Matchless and my tinkering has paid off.

Total cost £22 for stalk, £5 for switch, & £0 for Tech = £27 - Well worth the hassle.

Thanks boys  :y  The saga is over........what's next???

Keep that mechanic happy if he can do tech2 stuff for nought ;)

Throttle body and breathers?

Thanks AA - I'll be messing those up at the weekend cleaning them at the weekend - just need the 2 gaskets first and I'll ask for help when it all goes wrong.  ;D

I've already bought the carb cleaner - can't believe you got 50% off with Halfords card - I signed up for one yesterday - never know when it'll come in handy.  :y

Trouble is, Halfords are 5 times the price of anywhere else - £9.99 there as opposed to £1.99 from back street shop.

You may well need more than 1 can, so treat yourself to another ;)

Nope - & not on special offer either.  With discount should only be £2.25 per tin.

Push the boat out and treat yourself to a 3rd tin ;) - don't want to not do a perfect job for sake of £2...

I'm getting worried now.  Had the hoses off last week & all looked clean inside, the car is only 3 yrs old with 41k.  Throttle body blackened & idle still running high at 1500 rpm.

But 3 tins - jesus you like things clean! :o
