Title: Hissing - should I worry?
Post by: Chopsdad on 11 November 2006, 23:01:55
Previous questions and answers regarding my emissions light, lambda and maf sensor faults have all pointed to an air leak.

I've followed AA's comprehensive instructions and cleaned the breather system tonight.  The car feels  more responsive and I can now clearly hear a hissing sound and a continuous metallic clicking - which I'd hadn't heard before.

Is this:

:)A - Good news? as I can now get a real mechanic to locate the problem and fix it  .... or

:(B - Bad news? as I've bollocked something up in re-assemby?

When you say air leak, does it sound like a manifold gasket noise or is it more of a constent hiss?

Admittedly I don't know what the manifold gasket should sound like, but the hiss is constant and sounds like its coming from the underneath the middle of the pipe between the throttle body and the maf sensor on the engine side by the black tube that goes nowhere.

Without pics that's as best I can describe.  It could just be air flowing freely now I've cleaned the shit out of the hoses.

PS The hose between the sump and the engine was blocked with black sluge and margarine - but none on the filler cap - is this normal?

Pretty normal.....pop the suspect hose off and flex it see if you can see a split.....if you can tape it up as a shoirt term measure and purchase a replacement.

No point in lining a mechanics pocket if its as easy as that!
