Title: Starting hiccup
Post by: bob.dent on 11 December 2006, 15:14:31
My miggie normally starts with the first turn of the key, but yesterday morning it took 3 long attempts turning it over, left it a couple of minutes then it fired up straight away on the 4th attempt. Engine running fine once started. I have noticed just recently that the engine hunts a bit when idling which I guess must be the idle control valve playing up. Could this have anything to do with the starting problem, if not, any ideas? Oddly enough it started on the first turn of the key again this morning.

My old CDX v6 used to do this in the cold when it had been stood 24 hours or more. It would turn and turn and turn... but once I touched the throttle while cranking it would roar into life....

Hmmm, you may be experiencing the start of a crank sensor failure.

In my experience the car turns over just fine but doesn't fire at all. Try a few times, same thing, then on the next attempt it starts as if nothing has happened.

Mine did this a few times over a period of a month or two. In the end I decided it must be the crank sensor. Changed it and it has started everytime for about a year now.

You should have bought a Meega Voodoo Doll when you had the chance  ;D

I have a similar problem with my 2003 Omega 2.2 16v , it actually starts but with poor rpm and if I step on it it  engine would turn off.! . it happens only in cold mornings.

according to dealer , they changed the s.w version on ECU , 3 times now but that did not help. I hope some one can advice what should be checked else ?

in fact this affected the pick-up now with Auto shifting in economy mode, became more like an old lady trying to speed up.

Thanks for that but had new crank case sensor fitted less than a year ago (well aware of the symptoms). It did try firing on first couple of attempts so I think that rules out CCS. It's just odd that after leaving it a couple of minutes it fired on first turn. Was pretty cold this morning but fired up on first turn, so may just have been some crud drawn up from the tank that's now cleared itself.  :-/

Did you ever find out why  :question

I agree - if you get a splutter then it's probably not the crank sensor.

A friends car does something similar until he tried a different starting method.

If left for period of time when cold, if the key was put in and cranked straight over, it was reluctant to start, taking 2-3 tries before starting. Hot starting was no problem.

Thought about it and considered fuel pressure. The pump fires immediately the ignition is on and engine turning. He now leaves ign on, puts radio in, puts seatbelt on then cranks engine.

Seems to work ok, starting on first crank. Suggested fuel pressure drop. Might be of relevance in this case???
