is 16mpg too low for a 1999 2.5V6 estate?
i do a lot of stop start town driving
i also have an m-tek chip fitted(which i highly recommend!), and it also runs on lpg
thanks, stu 8-)

I have the same car ( auto) and tend to get about 22mpg around the doors and around 33-35mpg on a run
-
Seems a tad low. I would have thought you would get over 20mpg as I do on my 3.0 v6
-
Seems a little on the low side, when did you last clean breathers, throttle bodies and replace spark plugs?
Might be beneficial to check for fault codes.
Cam timing makes a big difference too.. I had a 3.0 Meega that was too advanced once, and it DRANK it!!
My 2.5 auth does about 20mpg around town, 30+ on a run.
-
currently showing 22mpg
-
Mines a 3 litre and I'm getting 21ish round the town, can get it lower if I hurtle round like a lunatic though!
-
I get 28mpg average mainly A roads and M-way but some suburban driving . Granted I drive like an old fart around town :D but it's never below 90 on the M-way :y!
Might have a lot to do with the 'chip' you've got in there , could maybe do a swap for the old chip and see if there's much differance? But if your right foot is heavy it will use a lot more ;)!!
-
mine's getting 18-19 MPG around town, quite a few short journeys from cold in with that which don't help as it's running rich, but then again I bought a 3.0 for the extra power ... and tend to use it ;)
it's much better on longer runs though ... seem to remember getting 19-20 MPG on similar driving on the 2.5 I had previously ... plus isn't it normal to get lower MPG when running on LPG?
-
i get 15-17 MPG round town, 20-30 on a run 3.0 manual
-
13mpg :y :y
However that is from Calor to town centre - idling for 5 mins, driving up hill to home, driving to Tesco cold and back, driving to newsagent, leaving car idling because it has no petrol in it, driving around town to a pet store then home again.
Let car warm up fully until switch over, thrash to work, drive hard home.
So only a few miles since filled up and a lot of idling to save petrol.
Will get better over the tank
-
13mpg??? My 4 litre v8 range rover did 13mpg on gas!!!
-
13 MPG on Gas Oh my God I would be Crying my eyes out.
You have not put a Sherman Tank Engine in there have you lol Oh no They do 1/2 MPG ouch and the New ones do even less.
What would you normal MPG be about on Gas ? Think i get about 30 odd on Gas about town and i have a heavy foot for high revs

thanks guys!
seems like it can vary quite a bit!
before the chip, it used to be just over 17mpg
before the lpg conversion(over 2 yrs ago now), i think it was around 18
the spark plugs were changed about ten months ago, when i changed the cam cover gaskets, and cleaned the breathers
i think it should have a full service, and maybe another clean of those breathers...

how do i check the cam timing?
the belt + rollers were changed by a vauxhall dealer around 10k ago
thanks
-
I only get 15mpg in my 2.2 on lpg running about town so 16 mpg for a 2.6 seems ok to me :y
When i looked yesterday the comp said av mpg was 20mpg and av speed was 19mph......even tho i just blatted it up the m4 to heathrow.....so just shows how much town work i do!
-
Worse this time of year since it is idling to get warm to save petrol.
OK then, towing on motorway around 65mph I get around 17mpg allowing lower gas energy density that is better than 2.0 at 17mpg petrol.
Cruising without van - no long trips so far but I have got mid 20s on a shortish run.
However I think it is time I cleaned the air filter, and check the calibration of the LPG system - local chap called Bernard will do it for £20 or so - he reckons I am runing too lean.
I think a richen at mid throttle would help consumption a bit.
To be honest at less than half the price of petrol I am not too bothered as the V6s sound so nice.
Anyway it is going up from 13 quite quickly as I had an easy drive to work.
Stop start on the V6s cripples fuel consumption, I haven't yet worked out how to get decent consumption from a V6. Perhaps I should not accelerate as hard, or go slower. Also mine is an automatic.
My commute is along country lanes and I cannot keep at a fixed speed.

3 ltr manual - it gets around 22 on mixed driving. Gets very low 30's on a long run.

similar mv6 auro although i am getting about 18 in the last week around town... :-/

Mine currently reading 24.6mpg, which is fairly average for me. Averaged 33mpg going to south of france and back.
-
Seems a little on the low side, I get 17mpg and run a 2.5 but I live in a very hilly area, when on the motorway I get 32mpg which seems about the norm for a 2.5 V6 auto

When I had Project TB1, I was getting 25 - 27mpg on my daily work run, and seemed to hover around 33 - 34mpg at 80mph
-
I guess I should be very happy with 26.2 then... :-/ Glad I don't have to drive in the big smoke... 8-)
-
My experience is close to 30 around town and 33-37ish on a long run (2.5 manual). Towing a fairly large open tailer I can get 28.
-
I was averaging around 28-30 until i had to drive home with a knackered dis pack, then it dropped to about 12 :o
-
what are the best things to check to improve mpg?
thanks, stu 8-)

Tire pressures, crap in the boot, bad DIS/wires/plugs, leaky injectors, dead a/c clutch, low auto trany fluid, heavy right foot, etc.
-
Very easy one, that never hurts is put a bottle of injector cleaner in when you put petrol in next 1-2 times.
Often slightly increases mpg AND performance.
Wont fix a mechanical problem, but may help a little.
-
hi, i have a 2.5 v6 and get lower 20s around town so i would say 10-20 is a little low.

Need to check, heavy gas tank, no DIS, N/A, leave on, haven't checked, YES

Never did hear, did you get it done?.....

I get about 21-22 round town, short journeys do kill v6's. Long runs on a light throttle can get about 35 on my 3.0 estate if no stop starts.
Intend to replace oil, oil filter, fuel filter and spark plugs over next week or so, fingers crossed will get slightly better mpg.
Have noticed since it has got colder that economy has dropped, was getting 24-26 over the summer months. Also noticing in the cold that the fuel cut off isn't working as readily when decelerating. Hoping it is a service item desparately in need of change.
-
on a long run i can get early 30's out of my 2.5 auto
Round town between 20/25, but i do occasionnly give it a bit of heavy right foot

I reckon my MPG is increased on my V6 since it's got colder. The cold air helps it run more efficnently. I definately get more power in the cold.. I usually get 80mph flat out up a steep hill near me - It creeps up to 90 when it's very cold.

How steep is the hill? :-?
-
Bloody steep!! My old 1.1 fiesta would only just make it in 3rd....
It's 2 lanes going up, and wide, so it's a lovely place to open up the V6.
Interestingly, on the subject of MPG, I did a recent calculation. Driving very carefully, on A roads, I got 22mpg averge - about 113 miles to £20 of petrol.
Anyone confirm if they get the same out of a 2.5?
That seems on the low side. I usually get 26+
-
Which steep hill?
If Cleeve did 110 on a bike, but chickened out when the rear wheel slipped
