can anyone tell me how much a new head gasket would cost at a garage?
is it something i could do myself?
-
Howdoo Matey.
First things first.
Why is the gasket needing done? Bear in mind there are two gaskets and, as you will see from various comments on this forum and elsewhere, HG failure on the 2.5 and 3 ltrs are reasonable rare. More common problem is oil cooler which is a more reasonable deal.
Would really need more info before anyone can give a reasoned solution.

i've got yellow sludge on the oil filler cap and around the neck of the pipe.
it's just come to my attention since getting back from a trip to cardiff.
it wasn't there a few days ago?
-
OK. Not the best of threads, but worth a read to perhaps get things in perspective a little?

How sure are you that the mayo was not there before? It can certainly accumulate if the car does not get hot enough to burn it off. The oil filler neck on the V6 is a known mayo collection point!
I would read the above thread to get some hints, tips and pointers then clean the filler neck before monitoring it for a few days whilst considering checking the water expansion tank at a MOT testing garage for exhaust gasses in the header.

Lol.....not unusual this time of year given how damp it is.
The oil filler neck on the omega is quite a long affair and gets very little oil wash from the cams. As a result, if there is condensation in the oil it can form a mayo like film around the oil filler making you think it has a headgasket failure.........It rarely is.
Is there any deposits on the dip stick....
I suspect its nothing to worry about...
-
Yes, a bit of mayo around filler cap is not usually anything to worry about, esp this time of year... ...check dipstick after running engine for a few mins to see if mayo there....
-
I had the same worries on my wife's car recently. Still under warranty I to took it to Vx. After checking the coolant wasn't contaminated with oil (or losing much) and that the dipstick was clear they cleaned the breathers ( I'd done 2 aleady cos they were full of mayo) put through an oil flush and changed the filter.
Advised to keep an eye on it but rare for Ecotec engine to suffer HG failure.
Have you cleaned your breather system - if not it could look like this....(http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/chopsdad/IMG_1258.jpg)

My 2.5 CDX has got plenty of mayo on the cap. It's not head gasket trouble though, it's just the time of year. I do long runs, and still get it...

went and checked mine, some yellowish liquidy type stuff on the filler neck .. not alot.... none on the dipstick... hope it is the time of year lol.
