I have just noticed (yesterday) that the Exhaust emission light is on (when engine is running).I know nothing about cars so some advise would be apprecaited.
Book says Contact VX dealership immediately.
Is this something i need to do immediately ,is it immediatley very damaging to the car?? Can anyone advise if this is a common problem and if so what the likely fix might be.

I notice from your 'Newbie' post that the car is a 2.2.
It needs a code read out with a Tech II, to acertain what the real problem is.
A lot of the guys on here have code readers, where abouts are you?
Are there any other symptoms showing up?
i.e. car not starting first time?
Stalling?
etc.

Yes, a diagnostic test really reqd - there are a few likely candidates, but I do not believe in changing stuff trial and error.
For your 2.2, a real Tech2, a cheapo Tech2 lead, or a generic OBDII reader should be able to get the codes....

If it flashes on and off it signifies emissions may be damaging cat, if it stays on it's probably ok for now.
I have a 2003 2.2 and have just cured mine after 4 months. Mine was a faulty Mass Air Flow Meter (MAF) and Tech 2 code was P0100.
However, I recommend getting it read and posting the codes on here and we'll advise on what to do next - please don't hand over any money to Vx until then.
It would also help to update your profile with more details :y
