I have a problem with my 2002 Omega 2.6 V6 auto. If I start on an incline –up or down- while turning i.e. stationary at traffic lights on a hill wanting to turn left. The car starts off ok and changes gear into third and there it stays, it will not change up the box. The only way to clear the fault is to stop and move off again and the gearbox works ok going through the gears. If I press the TC button before the box changes into third it immediately moves into third and then second, I can then deselect TC and the box works fine until the next inclined start.
I have taken it to the main dealer and they cannot find the problem a local Vauxhall specialist has suggested it may be problem traction control but offers no idea of how to fix it. Has anyone any ideas of what the problem is and how to fix it? I have head that it could be a software level problem but I really don't know. Any help would be welcome.

Any Gearbox ECU error codes stored - did Vx check this with Tech-II, if so do you know if they found any codes, and what are they?
I understand that the car starts OK i.e. 1st then 2nd then 3rd, but stays in 3rd? When this happens, will it not shift up to 4th nor down to 2nd? Or will it shift down but not up?
The 'Snow' mode will make it start at 3rd and stay at 3rd, maybe it cuts in for some reason and that's why it's stuck in 3rd? Have you checked the 'snowflake' button? Clean contacts etc, ot just temporary disconnect it completely for testing?
If all else fails, a simple ATF change and filter cleaning revived many 'failed' gearboxed...
And finally, if you are anywhere near TheBoy, ask him to check that the firmware on the gearbox ECU is uptodate, and upgrade it if needed.

Sounds more to do like snow mode, than TC
Are you sure that you're not getting confused, and pressing the snow/ice button instead of the TC?

Are you getting a 'Automatic Gearbox' message on MID (or equiv warning light on TID)? Is TC light on on dash?

Reading through the replies I think I should rewrite my question. Firstly as you may have already guessed I don’t know a lot about cars.
1. When I took the car to Vx -3 times- the only information I got was that there were no error codes stored in the machine and they were unable to reproduce the fault.
2. The button I was pressing was the ‘snow mode’ and not the traction control button.
3. The car changes from first into second and then sticks there, pressing the snow mode makes it jump into third. When I deselect snow mode it works perfectly.
4. I'm in Nottingham.

If you are in Nottingham, I suggest you make an effort and go to see TheBoy... a firmware upgrade to the Autobox will do the car no harm.
Failing that, cleaning the selector switch and changing the ATF can often resolve many auto transmission problems...

Nottingham to MK is just a (long) blast down the M1.... J25 to J14/13 :o

Are the LEDs to right of gear lever lighting up properly?
I would get fluid level checked, ideally renewed as a first...
