Title: Wish me luck!
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 11 September 2006, 18:45:52
Ok not an omega...but a veccy 1.8

3 weeks ago this motor cost me just about a grand to get it back on the road..... :(

It needed a new (well 2nd hand) gearbox, new clutch, new exhaust, 2 new tyres.

Tomorrow its going in for a taxi mot.....then to my local garage to have done whatever they find wrong.....plus cambelt kit change and waterpump (decided to do the waterpump at the same time coz i dont think its ever been changed.....and its cambelt driven, tho i carnt believe the waterpump has done 160k miles, if they are much the same as omega ones  :-/)

Its done 160k now......and what its just cost recently im determined to make it do at least 200k before i give up on it.

Hopefully it will sail thro the mot....its booked in for 8am....and hopefully the mot guy wont have his eyes open fully at this time in the morning  ;D

Best of luck TD! It's always a tense time putting a car in for an MOT, especially one that you've spent and done loads on.

Thanks for the support guys......but it failed  :(

One brake light out....easy peasy
One number plate light out....easy peasy
One rear indicator light showing white....easy peasy

and cost pennies to sort  with halfords trade card :)

Excessive play on donut shaped bush fitted at the top of the shock absorber o/s £45.48 +vat after discount for being a regular customer at vx dealer.....dunno if thats a good thing or not  :-/

I havent had the garage bill for changing it yet......but my car spent most of the day on the ramps....so guess it wont be cheap  :( .....it wasnt changing this that took the time.....it was the blinking water pump that took fooking ages to get out.....3 hours it took to get it out!!  :o

Now i suspect the water pump was the original one.....and it was well corroded in there.....it eventually came out.....in about 50 pieces  :o it was stuck in there so badly that only a big hammer and various chisels to break it up was the only option!!  It was discussed about using an air line connect to a 'persuader'  ::) to get it out....but the boss of the place was worried about damaging the casing with it, so hammer and chisel it was.

Anyway water pump changed, cambelt changed, donut shaped bush changed, bulbs changed and oil and filter change just for good measure.....i rushed it back to the mot place at 5.30pm.....hoping to get the mot for it as they dont shut til 6pm....and got told sorry m8....you'll have to come back tomorrow...were just closing  >:(

So apart from the water pump trouble i guess it was a pretty good result.....bearing in mind its done 160k  :)

Ouch sorry to hear that.

Well if the work done keeps it going for another 100k its money well spent.

Just think of the profits in the long run... ;)

If it goes for another 40-50k i'll be happy...as long as nothing else major is needed  :)
Then she'll be retired  ;)

Not bad TD, could have been a lot worse ;) got mine re-tested this afternoon as well, so i've got a shiney new M.O.T too. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I take it this veccy is being used as a cab? Whats the difference M.O.T wise?

Yeah i reckon it wasnt bad really....actually pretty good....it was just that water pump that took ages to get out......if id have known how much prob that was gonna cause i prolly wont have bothered with it.

Congrats on your shiney new mot  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

MOT wise.....cabs have to pass the same.....plus silly things like fire extinguisher/first aid kit not being present.....car not clean inside and out....fail!!

Other thing is i dont get advisories.....its a fail.....tho it does depend on the licencing authority on how keen they are.....mot station does what they are told by them ....like pass the basic test but must pass this and that etc

Just goes to show what a well maintained modern car can do. I had a 2.5 V6 Omega estate with manual gearbox which had clocked up 250000 miles with no major mechanical failures, just the usual things changed like suspension components, brakes, tyres and serviced regularly and I still see it about now. Mind you it was LPG which runs a lot cleaner than petrol.

Well done TD thats another year taken care of [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
