When I first got the car, there was always a ten second spell of hydraulic lifter noise when cold, a very loud "tapping".. which would then die down, but was still noisy for a few miles of driving.
After a couple of oil changes, the engine oil is now a lot cleaner, and I've done about 1,000 miles, but the noise upon startup still hasn't gone away (and hasn't got any better)..
Questions are:
1) Although a pain in the arse, can I live with it a bit until the weather is better before I look at it?
2) If the suspect lifter gets any worse, would it cause any major damage, eg if it failed completely, valve damage?
3) As and when I come to change it, is it easier to use Mark's procedure and clean out the lifters individually and replace the knackered one.. or should I just replace the set? What do they cost?
4) While doing the lifters and taking camshafts/cambelt off, is it worth changing the head gasket at the same time? Thinking I might do it all at the next cambelt change, which would be 165k..(125k now)
Any advice on the questions above and the noisy lifter mucho appreciated :y

It can wait a while

No, maybe a small drop in power as one of teh valves doesn't open fully (it would need to be very bad)

Pricey, 4-5 quid each is the cheapest.....do you not have any spares from your breakers....

Your choice.....if you did remove the head you coule flatten exhaust maniofld etc off, change stem seals, clean and check lifters.........
