Title: Engine not reaching full temperature
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 06 March 2007, 23:19:54
Possibly, anyway

Sometimes temp gauge only just comes off the cold, and there is not enough heat coming out of heater vents.. after a 50 mile run

No nasty pressure in the system, but there is a healthy amount.

Maybe engine not reaching full temp? Or a sender/gauge problem?

Could well account for drop in mpg.

James,

Mine is very similar.  After 30 min run to the office its only just off the bottom.  I suspect stuck open thermostat.  After a longer run it does get up to temperature.

I have no doubt this will affect fuel consumption.

Does yours ever get higher?

Change the stat and flush the coolant system, easy enough to do on a 2/3 engine...

If the engine is not getting warm tehn it wont get out of the warmup cycle.....which means running rich.

As a check, start the engine from cold and feel the top radiator hose. If it gradually warms up with the engine the thermostat is not closing fully. It should suddenly get very hot when the engine gets up to normal temperature.
