Title: Exhaust - Oh my god..
Post by: dtnorth on 27 February 2007, 01:10:01
I had realised that my car sounded a little farty about town.

It was not until I had driven from South Wales up to Scotland and had a look
that I saw how bad it was.

Just after the tail pipe, where it splits into two pipes.   Completely sheared
with an inch gap between both pipes.

Given that the bugger had to get me from Scotland back down to Wales on a
shoestring budget .   I cut up 2 empty bean cans and hose clipped it all back together.

Worked a treat, however I now need a complete new top to bottom exhaust.

Anyone any idea on prices, locations etc.  The emphasis being on cheap...

Thanks.....

Sorry to hear of the exhaust probs, Know the feeling always happens when you can least afford it. :'(

If the break is after the box then try asking a local exhaust centre if you can have a piece of pipe to attach to the box end. Though you said that the noise was loud it will probably be before then. Mine split on the flexie before the cat on the down pipe. Could not get a replacement flexie. 'No call for that part sir'. Knew that you could get similar replacements on the net direct from B***o. In the end put in a flexie from off a VW golf exhaust. Clamped either end to stop it moving.

Result, exhaust centre £120 out of pocket, me £5 to scrappie.
Good luck though with your quest. :y

I take it you're in South Wales, might help to update your profile to say where you are what you drive.
There are some cheap exhausts on ebay like these guys (http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=omega&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sadis=200&fpos=CV6+1BZ&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&seller=1&sass=eternalcar&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=) but I can't comment on quality.

I’ve just bought one of their back boxes.  My GM central sections still have a couple of years left in them and so I went for a stopgap until I replace the whole thing.

When it arrived (3 days) it looked a lot better made than I expected though I haven’t actually fitted it yet as I was away the weekend so will be doing so this.

If you do go for their full system check postage, I was offered a discount of 25% on the second item & 50% on the third.

remember cheap bargin exhausts from KwikFit and similar places are false economy!

I bought my 2.2 with its Orginal exhaust, it lasted 95k & 6 years, so i got another.

I bought the exhaust on Trade club, cat back from a vx dealer it was £200. I then paid my local mechanic £20 cash to fit.

Sounds so much better compared to other 4 pots i have heard with non genuine exhausts.

Although I do have a very, very slight blow where the new zorst joins after the cat, this seams to go when warm though  :-/

Think you will find there are NO pattern exhausts for the 2.2.
However you can get bloody good pattern Cats for the 2.2 .

What some people do is fit a 2.0 system to the 2.2 but i am told they sound awful, as they only have one central silencer and yes you can buy pattern 2.0 exhausts

I'm not sure about this, I think Bosal list a system for the 2.2 according to their online catalogue.  Not that I am recommending them!

Not only do they kill any refinement, they seem to be designed to rot away within a couple of months of the warranty running out. It's impressive ho accurately they have managed to time the warranty expiry these days ;-)

An OEM exhaust might list 6 years, but 2.5 seems to be par for the course on a cheapo one IME, and that's on a car that never gets started without doing at least 10-20 miles.

2.2 pattern ones are now available from Bosal.  These are not the same as the ones Bosal make for GM!!!

I finally got a local "family run garage" quote for a near full exhaust system.

I also queried for front and rear brakes pads / discs.

The complete exhaust system (excluding manifold)

labour             £50.75
centre (1)        £86.65
centre (2)        £103.55
rear                  £86.54
cat                  £310.94

front brakes pads & discs

labour    £71.75
pads      £25.32
discs      £85.14

rear brakes pads & discs

labour    £96.25
pads      £21.56
discs      £92.99

I take it thats all genuine stuff and they are making money on the parts........labour rates are high to......and do you realy need a CAT.....

At those sorts of prices worth looking into a custom stainless system.

Mine was only £400 fully fitted, sounds better aswell  ;D

prices are way to high for the exhaust, i suspect you don't need a cat.

Remember i paid £200 for GM zorst cat back!

There's almost £200 labour on the brakes - any chance you can do yourself? The front are really easy certainly less than an hour per side if you take you time.  Not sure of the back as I've never done them myself but I would not think they were much harder.

Parts are expensive, genuine Vx parts are considerably cheaper on TC.  Labour is expensive as well.

If they are not genuine parts, be warned the exhaust will likely have a loud, crappy noise, and I find pattern disks warp too easy...

I could probably tackle the front brakes myself.  No idea about the rear.

Does anyone know if the Haynes manual for the Omega A is mechanically
valid for the Omega B.

I've never been able to find an Omega B haynes manual,
however I do have the VX TIS on CD for the Omega B.

Omega A - Badged the Carlton here, 1987-1994 i think

Omega B - 1994 - 2003

There is a Hayes book for Omega B, and most of it is the same for the later facelift Omega (incorrectly refered to as Omega C)

Main differences are interior trim, and electonic throttle bodys.

Main underpinnings though, brakes ect, handbrake cables are all the same  :y

my local vauxhall dealer did my front discs and pads for £100 all in, couldn't believe it, that was not the last mot.   I've recently replaced the entire exhaust on mine, £195 for the cat, £180 for the 2 rear sections.

Well I do need new discs and pads all round, £90 for front and £80 for rear. Also need 5 new brake pipes, all are corroded at the corners, and I need a new front strut top bearing, they said that's about 4 hours labour. Total will be about £500 + VAT and they are hoping to get it finished tomorrow for me.

The discs have been on for a while and were well worn so I was expecting to have to replace them even without all of the rust. They took it around the block a couple of times to see if the rust would come off but they were still pitted. A brake pipe in the engine bay was replaced about 4 years ago and the others have lasted 10 years so overall I'm not too shocked.

Can't wait to get it back and be able to get out again  ;D

I've finally sussed what needs done.

Everything from the rear up to but not including the CAT.

Many an hour spent underneath, half ramped up on a high kerb.

I have sourced the lot for £180.   However I have to do it myself.

Are their any pitfalls I should be aware of.  I've bought all the rubber mountings and
various brackets.......

Granted at that price it will be rubbish but severe budget restrictions
dictate costs at the moment.

All my cash is going into a divorce at the mo.   Hence the cheapness..

Forgot to say, I've only bought the rubber bits and some bolts/brackets.

Please bear in mind, I'm a bit of a computer geek, and screwed when it comes to car repair.

Im also living in a rented room, due to the divorce, and unable to do car repairs in front of my
Yootha Joice and Brian Murphy landlord.

Therefore I'm reliant on any info I can get.

Car looks great, just sounds like a fart going through a tin.

Yes, find someone near you with a TC card ;) (or pay Autobahnstormers £20 per year for one)
Title: Re: Exhaust - Oh my god..
Post by: dtnorth on 04 March 2007, 21:17:20
Whats a TC card.

I always thought TC was Top Cat.

Expecting Officer Dibble any mo at the loud exhaust.

Maybe I should just Ramp up the CD player and go for Bling.

However Vidors Tocatta doesn't quite rub it as Bling I suppose.

Bear in mind, I have to repair it myself, and not in my own
drive.      My ex got that, so I have to do it in some some
industrial estate somewhere.

I'll probably get the bloody thing falling on top of me.

Its all being done on the serious cheap, as I unfortunately found myself
out of work for about 4 months due to ill health.

After 24 years of non stop work,  my bank basically screwed me, as did my ex.

I have one piece of dignity left and that is my old omega.

I lost my home.   My job.    A partner of 15 years.   All I want is for all I can call my own left to work.
without being screwed.

Any assitance appreciated.

Please tell me thats a genuine GM exhaust for that price!!

Cheap exhausts are false economy, it maybe cheap now but in 2 years time it will need replacing again, were as mine is good for 6 years at least!

Nope, its 2 cut up dog food tins and 4 jubilee clips, and never ending getting the
piss taken out of you by bloody vauxhall franchises , kwik fit and the like.

See pic below as to an M6 around Lancaster quick fix re snapped exhaust on a 2.2

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament and I would like to offer whatever help I can give.  I have a pit available to me which would make the work easier I have also played with several exhaust systems including the 2.0 vectra version.  You would have to fart your way to sunny tidworth.

Thanks very much for the offer.

Just phoned VX in Bridgend, Wales.  Quoted £550 for rear silencer and 2 mid silencers.
F*%@ing thiefs....

I'm visiting Kwik-Fit at 12.    Quoted around £200 for the same parts and fitting.

Lets see what they actually quote after inspection.

Ill post the results later.....

As mentioned before Kwik-Fit exhausts are FALSE economy, in 2 years it will be shot. GM will last 6 years +

GM exhausts are double walled and the metal used it s a lot thicker, they last and sound much, MUCH better than pattern KwikFit ones...

Become a member of Autobahnstormers (£20) and get a member card - (that gets you Trade Club prices at Vauxhall)

Or get a normal Vauxhall Card.

I paid £200 for mine, which is CAT back (2 mid section + rear silencer) all GM Vauxhall stuff!! The KwikFit exhausts sound appalling, CraigR has a non GM zorst and it sounds really awful.

Get the zorst on GM trade + local mechanic to fix  :y

Im still trying to source this exhaust, namely the rear silencer, and the 2 mid silencers, however Im confused as to what is required.

www.onlineautomotive.co.uk show the following diagram, which looks right.

Reference    Part Image              Price Add
90794-OL     Catalytic Converter  £132.17
GM442C-OL  Central Silencer         £58.25
GM441D-OL  Central Silencer         £48.48
GM443B-OL  Rear Silencer             £50.16
GMR71-OL    Rubber Mount              £1.80
SYL10-OL      Clamp                        £2.50

However zooming into the Central Silencer parts on there web site shows the following part which doesnt look right at all.

Does anyone know if this is the right exhaust system for a 2001 2.2
Sport Auto.....

Thanks...

Don't think any of the photos , other than the cat, relate to the omega. The photo of the back box gets me worried,

The parts diagram is correct 2.2 requires 2 centre boxes and 1 back box as per diagram. Get also the bolts, nuts , washers to fasten the centre box to the end of the cat . Sods law that you will shear them off if you do it yourself

Whatever non vaux system you get check carefully the shape of the back box it should be the same as the oem box ie almost cuboid in shape and fits  snuggly in the space provided- not cylindical

Mine is cylindrical
exhaust is quiet but when the engine is warm  stationary and in drive the rear box just touches part of the chassis leg and the vibrations are not very pleasant.

been back to supplier/fitter on regular basis = but still not quiet all the time
