Hi,
Can someone please confirm how much of this stuff, and where exactly I should be putting it on - I've obviously cocked it up once now and I don't want to do it again - I've got some proper vx gaskets arriving this afternoon so with a little advice on sealant from you guys I should be sorted.
I know the guide says as a rule at the back where the half moons are, and after the front two cam locks, but how much? Would it be a bad idea to just put it all the way around?

This is what I was referring to AA - I did follow it yes, but I just don't think I put enough sealant on and I desperately want to get it right this time, hence the :'( for help!

I watched Mark do this on mine the other week & he didn't use that much, just a good blob on the "sharp" corners.

Has anyone put a smear of sealant all around the camcover edges?

I can't help with the info as I haven't done mine yet, but for the benefit of TD and AA here's a picture of it:

isnt it RTV sealant?

According to TIS, it goes in the semi circular bit at the rear of the cam cover, to complete a good seal gasket to cover and at the front it goes in the angles where the gasket rises over the cam front mounting..
Hope this helps, if anyone knows different I'm sure they'll correct me :y

You put it over the half moons and put a blob on each "sharp turn" in the gasket.
Too much is bad, I made that mistake. :-[
Just make sure you remove all the old sealant from both the gaskets and make sure the mating surfaces are completely clean.
The super important bit is making sure you don't overtighten the gaskets. As they are rubber they don't need much torque (8nm as everyone knows).

As LB says dont use too much.....you dont need on the straights.....just the sharp corners....i put too much on mine according to Mark....but i think i have got away with it....
One other point.....the gasket may have moved a tad when you fitted the cover.....not sure if this is a correct tip....but i let the sealant go off a bit (15mins) before fitting the cover....i tried to do it straight away after applying the black goo.....but one of the 1/2 moons kept falling out of place.....giving it 15mins made the goo go off a bit and held the gasket in place :y
Also LB i think suggests reusing the gasket.....which will be fine i think as its a new one.....but before you do double check it hasnt been pinched or got a split in it :y

Just didn't use enough sealant where it counts I think - and I put it on the straights which I think was a mistake - I reckon the gaskets must have slid about on the sealant and not made a proper seal - or something!
One sides on again, the others just about ready - quick ciggie and then I'm going for it - spent about 3 hours just cleaning the muck and oil off of all the parts it plastered!
Cross those fingers...!

IS THAT THE TIME??!
I've just rolled her back onto the drive fully back together again, haven't tried turning her over, thought I'd leave that till the morning, give that sealant time to sort its life out..

Just ran on the drive for 20 mins, smoke - then nothing - probably burning what I couldn't see to clean off..
Checked a plug, no oil - pity can't check passenger side easily.. got a 400 mile run planned on Tuesday, that'll be the real test..
Keep em crossed.. :-/

Maybe I need a new cover - it before I did it the FIRST time, some of the bolts were done up stupidly tight, and one was half hanging out - it doens't look warped, but perhaps it is..
It can wait at least a week, changing them twice in one week is enough to drive anybody nuts, three times is beyond a joke!
Perhaps if I get the bits one of you chaps would have a look for me, just to make sure I'm doing it right - although I'm pretty sure I am...
Still got to attempt my thermostat at some point, so maybe two birds, one stone...

If someone can tell me honestly if its any harder to do the passenger cam cover gasket on a v6 than a 2.2 (ive done mine.....so know whats involved) then i could be willing to have a go......if its not any harder....while you change my disks and pads ;) (I recall youve done yours recently.....and its not something ive done before)

I reckon my problems are: knackered cam cover, due to idiots attacking it with a ratchet at some point to try and stop the leak and location / amount of sealant, although if my drivers side holds then I've got that sorted...
However, guidance always appreciated - and it *probably* wont take too long for me to do your discs and pads, mine were really straight forward..

Anyone know how much a new cam cover is for a V6.....there plastic arent they?.....my 2.2 was...so wouldnt have thought they could be too much dollar :-/

the passenger side isn't *too* bad, it's more a case of keeping the damn wiring loom out of the way !!
covers are about £70-80 each - but come with new gaskets - passenger side is P/N 90501638
... and yes, they are plastic !!

when I done mine I removed the plastic conduit from the passenger side loom that runs over the cam cover. There's enough slack to keep all the cables clear and give the same amount of room as the drivers side
I also suggest removing these bits that are at the front of the passenger side exhaust cam; the cam sensor and the support bracket for one of the earth cables that runs along side the dipstick.
