The air con on my 97 elite hasn't worked since I got the car, I have assumed that this is due to lack pressure or no refrigerant in the system. My reasoning behind this is that when under the front of the car changing the oil I noticed that the frame at base of condenser was detached at one side, so I have assumed the condenser leaks. I am going to replace the condenser first but I wanted to canvas opinion on what else I should or can check before taking it to an aircon specialist for regassing. Any input will be much appreciated.

Well yes a broken condenser will have a detrimental effect on the system! ;)
Other thing I would just check is the compressor turns freely. Just remove the aux belt and check compressor turns ok.

If it hasnt worked for a while then just replacing the condensor may not be enough.....seals dry out and can start leaking.
Best way forward is replace the condensor and get the aircon peeps to add dye when they regass it.....this way if it stops working shortly afterwards then dye will help identify where its leaking from :y

To add a bit to laidback's post.....check that the front face of the aircon pump pulley is free to turn, this is the clutch plate attached to the compressor shaft
A replacement condensor should fix it but it will need a new receiver-drier as well then a full vacuum before re-charging. Dont attempt to fill it with one of the DIY re-charge kits

Thanks for the useful tips guys. I will start with the condenser and receiver dryer and hope the compressor seals are ok. :y
