Source of info Haynes
Manual gearbox pre 99
up to gearbox no JP3097AO1361659 use Vxall transmission oil 19-40-704
From gearbox no JP3097AO1361659 use Vxall transmission oil 19-40-764
from 99 onwards use Vxall transmission oil 19-40-764
Book says important not to mix different oils in box - so if unsure drain and fill with latest type.
Auto dexIII is only for autoboxes.
Someone should be along shortly to give you type of gearbox oil to use other than Vxall - I would think Vxlls is rather pricey

Not with a Trade card it will not. ;)

Dexron III is not on TC, but costs just under £7 per 1L normal Vx trade price.

I changed my manual gearbox oil recently.
The only official oil to use is the latest Vx stuff (which in fact supersedes the stuff mentioned in the Haynes manual).
Cost around £9 per litre trade / trade club.
You need 1.2 litres.
Some people say Dextron III would be fine, I suspect it would.
Some oil lists spec SAE80W (fully or semi-synthetic).

I run all my R28 boxes on dextron 3 and have never had a problem!!

Hi
Going back to my original thread i rang my local vx dealers for this gearbox oil, they said its a special kind of oil which im assuming is right, they are saying its the latest oil, model year 1999 onwards which i need cos im draining the lot out replacing with new (says haynes manual) they have giving me a part number 90540998 could anyone confirm this before i buy its £7.50 + vat for 1 litre.
Thanks

If I remember correctly the correct procedure for replacing the gearbox oil when you have the older type is to drain the old, fill with new, then run for 20 miles or so and then drain and refill again.
I seem to remember a thread on this in the past but have not found it. Perhaps someone will confirm whether this is a figment of my imagination or not
I'm also thinking of doing this soon to try to help with the poor shift from 1st to 2nd.
BTW what's the TC price - may be worth me getting a card (given the raft of other bits I need soon)

Ive just bought 3 x 1 litre bottles for a manual gearbox part No 93165290 for £12.46. I hope they have given me the right stuff.
-
Thats to cheap, sounds to me that it may be the wrong stuff, vx dont seem to know alot! I was quoted last week £4.04 per litre part number 92165290 I had to ring another vx dealer to get the right oil and they said you have to order it in as a special order
Hope this helps

The stuff ive just bought should have been £4.04 but the parts bloke gave me a discount because ive been there more times than ive been home this week. The part No I have 93165290 is off the bottles, so is this the wrong stuff then :-/
-
The stuff I got has the part number 93165290, in the description on the invoice it says 9120541.
Cost TC (or Trade), not sure what I got, was £3.95 + VAT each.
So about £9 all in for 2 litres (my mistake earlier).
It's thin and red and I suspect at least partly synthetic.

I will use it then :y.
I intend to drain the gearbox and fill with this stuff, take it for a run then drain and refill again.
