Title: where is it safe to jack for very short periods
Post by: bogit on 05 April 2007, 08:15:25
i need to get the front end of my cr up in the air so i can look at my auto box leak,
i think the safest way is to get to work and use the commercial vehicle jack there.

now is it safe to jack the car up on the sump of the engine, or either of the two cross members for very short periods of time, ie untill i can get the soddin great axle stands at work under the rails of the car ?
 :-?

You should have a jacking points on both sides of the car, they are directly behind the removable plastic sections to the sills you can usually get the small disc on the jack in these but if they are bigger it should still be ok.

I wouldn't jack the car up going anywhere near the oil sump or the two cross members as the jack could easily slip causing more damage.

Do not jack on the sump!!!

You can jack on the main cross beam (i do), but you need a deep jack for this. That goes back beyond the sump  :y

The crossmember is not designed or strong enough to take the weight in that direction...

Well then i have been doing it wrong for the past god knows how many years!!
its designed to carry the full weight of the car, and its bolted to the chassis rails, the load is spread on all four mounting points its absolutely no problem jacking it on the crossmember proividing you have a large pad on the jack!!!
have always jacked it in the middle of the member both TDs and the Megameega no problem at all and when i changed the engine mounts it had an axle stand under the middle of it, apart form a few scratches on the member nothing else has happend!!
