Title: Autobox software upgrade
Post by: old cruiser on 31 March 2007, 16:19:36
It's probably been a while now since some of you guys had your autoboxes upgraded, eveything still ok with them? or has any strange things started to occur with the boxes since the  software upgrade;  just wanted to confirm it's worth doing as I might be getting mine done sometime next week.
Cheers Pete

No problems whatsoever, the only downside is that I got used to how good it is so I am no longer excited about it...  :(

Should get TheBoy to downgrade it for a while so that I can appreciate the upgrade again!  ;D

Also, mine was done mid-December so it's just over 3 months now.

Cheers for that, did that upgrade get rid of that annoying cold running non-sense where it revs up to 3,000 rpm before changing up into next gear until warm, coz that's the bit that gets on my nerves more than anything !
Cheers Pete

No, but mine only does that to the end of the block.  Maybe you should check the level?

Hhmm, well all being well I'll be getting a '99 tomorrow, think I'll see if there's a difference between that & the '95 I've been used to, then think about an upgrade.......

well my gold one was a 2000 model year - that had v8 software (which came up just as TheBoy was saying that the latest he'd seen was v7 - the new version is 9!!)

The main difference I noticed was that there used to be a bit of a clunk when the torque convertor locked up, which disappeared entirely post-upgrade. In fact now you'd have to be watching the rev counter to notice the change!

No other anomalies ... so worth doing ... in fact, I will be getting the new silver estate upgraded to the new firmware too  :y

Mine's still running nicely since the upgrade. Changes and going into / out of lockup are much smoother. It still changes up occasionally just when I'm squeezing more throttle on. I think as theo has said it seems to pretty much do as it pleases until 1/2 throttle. A mate of mine drove it the other week and commented that it was the best auto car he'd ever driven and he's driven plenty that really ought to be better than the humble Omega.

A well worthwhile upgrade, I'd say.

But GM boxes are among the best so it would be stupid if the Omega auto was not one of the best around

Agreed. What I meant to say is, given the price and age relative to my Omega, ought to be better.

had mine upgraded about a month ago - difference is phenominal - smooth now.
Tech who did it said that the latest upgrade also gets rid of the box 'hunting' when towing - Let you know if this is so after Easter as will be towing the van (watch out clarkson) quite a bit next week.

had mine updated, but at the same time had the engine managment software done, running on LPG means I don't really see mcuh diffrenace in the engine managment but the car runs very smooth, had the cruise control fitted at the same time, so now I don't even use an accelorator  :y easy motoring

I did the MV6 around October last year, no problems at all. It was a GS8.20 ECU, took from V5 to V9.  It seems like its the V8 to V9 that makes the difference.

When I picked up the Elite the other day, one of the first jobs was doing the g/box firmware - couldn't tolerate it on its old software....

Can you do the firmware Jaime?

What version do you reckon would be in mine?

Yes, I can do firmware, alas I'm nowhere near you :(

What year is yours?  Most up to 2000 seem to be V5

Took van on 200+ round trip in  Wales - mix of motorway and A roads  keeping to the speed limit  ::)rather keen here in N wales) ::) cruise control on 60mph and 50 mph  well 58 and 48 - always careful around here. Box behaved beautifully - the hunting for gears was much less than before.
MPG for whole trip was 19.8 mpg - not bad towing 1400kg

The pre 98 ECUs are not flashable. Also, different ECU, so cannot just copy the later flash to a ROM...

Hi,

I am interested in having my 98 mini facelift autobox software upgraded.  TheBoy are you ever around the Cambridge area or able to meet up between where you and I live???  Failing that is travelling 70 odd miles to have the software upgraded really worth the journey??

I rarely cross the M1, though occasionally get out to Newmarket/Ely area, but normally in a rush when I do...

I think its a very worthwhile update, but 140m round trip is a lot of fuel....

Thanks for the reply, I shall have to think about it, to be honest I dont find my gearbox any worse than the two previous cars I had before this one (2000 S Type Jag, 2001 Merc C Class) in fact I think it is smoother than the Merc!

Hmmm... I only did a 60 miles round trip (from St Albans to Bletchley) and yes, it was worth it...

It would be 140 mile round trip for me, which means about £25 in juice plus the fee to have it done £45 so looking at £70, yes I agree not a huge sum of money but I am in the process of buying my first flat so every penny counts!
