OK, with the cam covers to do once I get the parts and ClarCE to come round and offer advice, I'm turning my attention to my inoperative central locking.
The central locking is completely inoperable by either the key (in either front door or the tailgate) and the remote, although I have tried changing the batteries and 'reprogramming' the unit by holding the remote 8in from the red blob next to the sunroof switch.
Fuse 20 is OK (which according to my manual covers the central locking) as the heated seats in the back work, which also work off the same fuse.
I've read in the Haynes manual that the control module lives in the driver's side footwell kick panel, so I was thinking of getting at that with the electrical contact cleaner (hey - worked on the MID after all :)) - is that behind the little cubbybox to the right of the steering column? How do I get that out so I can see the control module? Is it likely to be this, or is there an actuator in the driver's door? Or is there another likely cause?

The kick panel is the bit done near bonnet release, and yes, that is where ecu is...

Aha. Do I take the cubby out, or does the whole kick panel come off somehow? Mr Haynes is suspiciously quiet on such matters ::)

on the kickplate is a bit of plastic with a vauxhall badge on. unclip to reveal some torx screws - remove. Then move the plastic you've just unscrewed to reveal 1 of the 2 screws that hold the kick panel on, the other is visible near the bonnet release lever.
The coin tray does not need to be removed.

Righto, had a go at this earlier.
Got the door panel off, gave the connector that takes the wires from the door handle down to the c/l motor a clean, and also the connector into the c/l motor. No joy.
Managed to remove the driver's footwell panel, where I found a large multipin connector. But nothing that looked like a central locking ECU. What does it look like?
Oddly enough I found a large multipin connector (like the lower one of the two that are joined together on the inside of the wing in the footwell) that appears to be connected to wires going towards the rear of the car...but it wasn't connected to anything, and I couldn't find anything to connect it to. Suspicious?
I should have taken a picture really...would it help?

Assuming you have RF remotes, the ECU is the box behind the connector you saw in footwell. Says Megamos (likely) or Bosch on it.

AHA!!! I now see the problem...the ECU is completely missing ::)
Luckily one of my neighbours is hoarding a number of 2.5TDs, so we tried taking off the 'Megamos' ECU from his 96N CDX, however, the pins are different!
I'm off to see if anyone is breaking one with a 25-pin (13 pins on the top row, 12 on the bottom) ECU, then we could be in business...

You cannot just replace immobiliser ECU!!

Is yours RF or IR?

Err...dunno. Early car (Jan '95), has a red pip next to the sunroof control, remote plipper is separate to the key and just has one button, with a red LED that flashes when you press it.
Didn't know that the central locking ECU doubles as the immobiliser ECU :-[ Guess I have an expensive time to replace, then?

Fortunately you ahev teh early IR and as such he central door locking setup is seperate to the immobiliser.....

Phew. Presumably it would still be preferable to get an ECU with compatible remote as I assume my own would need to be recoded?

Speak to Timbuk....hes breaking one with IR....best get the remote fob to if you can..........
