Been having a few probs with the auto box.
When accelerating to around 30 sometimes it will drop out of gear, esp if I accelerate quickly and then cruise at 30ish. It doesnt happen at any other speed or if I continue to accelerate pass 30. It will stay out of gear until I release the gas and then after a few seconds the whole car will jump forward and a thud will be heard. Sometimes after the thud the 'check automatic gearbox' warming comes on the display but not all the time. If I drop it into 2nd when it slips decellerate and then move the gears up it will recover fine with no warning.
Am I in trouble? I will be doing the gearbox level check soon, and I am considering renewing the oil and cleaning the filter. Is there anything else I should suspect or is the box on its way out?

Renew the fluid/filter ASAP before more damage is done. May need new box though....

Is the filter the magnet in the large sump?

No, there is another filter...

poo, dont like the idea of replacing the box. :-[ I hope the fluid change and filter clean will work.
How do I clean the filter properly? Solvent, WD40.....?

The filter can be renewed. If its still decent, I guess the usual parafin type products will work, but make sure you get all parafin out before refit.

Once sump off, I believe so...

When refitting the sumps is it best to get a new gasket AND liquid gasket or just use liquid gasket with the old ones?
Can I use any liquid gasket as I cannot find the loctite stuff...?

Liquid gasket should be used instead of the normal one, not in addition.
If using a nromal gasket, you could add some suitable RTV sealant, but I wouldn't recomend it as standrad procedure unless there was a known issue of leaks if sealant is not used (e.g. the camcovers seals).
As for Loctite, I did not try alternative products myself but I suppose any good brand product of similar description would do...

Yes. You are in trouble :(
The fluid change may cure it, but when this happened to me.. the box ended up slipping so much it shagged it.
Ended up fitting a replacement (thankfully freebie) box.. not a hard job though.

Right sump is off:
-magnet is covered in what can only be described as black grease but is prob just really fine metal particles mixed with thick DextronIII.
-the oil is very dark red
-the oil did have just a few really really small metal particles prob less than 1/10th of a mm but not that many ( I saw 5)
-no big metal bits
-filter looks blocked, cleaned with parafin now seems to flow ok but not so good that would indicate a broken filter
I guess the prognosis so far is ok? I was fearing much worse.....

what happened? is it fixed?
this sounds exactly like mine (split servo seal inside the box i think and had to be rebuilt on warranty)

replacing the fluid and cleaning the filter has improved the operation of the gearbox and reduced the incidence of the slipping gears. However the gears do slip occasionally, but only when I floor it to 30 and then cruise. Otherwise it works brill. I just dont floor it unless I know I will be reaching 40 or more.
Looking for another autobox though....
