Hi was wondering if anyone can help. Recently had my omega into a Vauxhall Dealer for a check on TECH 2 as it was cutting out on low revs, dealer came back to me and said 02 sensor needed replacing
at £190!!
Can anyone tell me what this 02 sensor does. As trying to get any information from muppets
in the dealership was like pulling teeth, all he said was i can still use my car!!

o2 sensor monitors the exhaust gases, and relays back to ecu if running rich/lean/ok etc....
-
Can you do a paperclip test, and post up codes?
-
O2 sensor sits in the exhaust downpipe just before the catalytic convertor.
Usually white with wires going to a connector.
As TheBoy says it measures the air fuel mix in the exhaust gases and then relays back the information to the ecu so it can ensure the optimum mixture is maintained.
£190 for it is silly money, and also the symptoms seem wrong for that.

Also, later models have 2 o2 sensors per cat - one before and one after

Check your Codes with the paper clip test
I got my O2 sensor for £80 you can get them on ebay cheapish also.
The 2 litre only has one O2 sensor the 2.2 has two of them

It is often misdiagnosed by Vx and could be a simple air leak or faulty Mass Air Flow meter. I had the same fault last year and the codes will help us to pinpoint the problem and possible offer a DIY solution at a fraction of the cost.
Follow this link on how to do it http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152601768

Also known as a lamda sensor.

if you have two sensors on the car then the one in front of the cat is an o2 sensor and the one after the cat is a lambda sensor they are different.

Thanks for the help boys, will have a go at the paperclip test and post up codes :y

And this is wrong as if the engine is running too rich for a period, the catalytic converters will be damaged.
Another bit of advice - try not to go for cheap ebay items nor after market as apparently they fail quite quickly after fitting - go for genuine sensors. People on here, myself included, have a trade card which gets a discount on parts so no need to pay retail prices! Just ask.
Good luck with getting it sorted.
