Title: Heater control problem - only 1 speed
Post by: the hamster on 16 April 2007, 16:38:44
Hi, this is on my Astra CDX but i'm sure they must be the same/similar to the Omega.

Basically the problem is that I only have 1 speed on the control switch  >:(.

Number 1/2/3 dont work then number 4 comes on at full chat! I used to get 3 and 4 until recently but now 3 has given up too.

I've tried replacing the switch, fuses and even checked the wiring is secure on the back of the switch.

Is there something i'm overlooking here or is it a bit more technical than that

Any help is appreciated

First up....what model year.....

The fault will be a knackered speed control resistor....its location is model year dependent......but is normaly mounted on the blower motor....

From memory....the blower is below the plastic scuttle cover at the rear of the engine bay and has the resistor mounted on it....

Its an easy one to diagnose as the resistor is not used with the fan at full speed, only on the lower settings...

Seem to remember that the resistors can be bought seperatley...in fact heres one on ebay....but check its the right one first...

Wow reminds me of the rovers - heater resistors always blow on them

Yep - resistor pack.

Neighbour had the same problem. Not too bad to fit. Under the scuttle in the centre.

so do I attack this from under the bonnet or through the dash?

Went to try and get one from a scrappy today but could I get to it? Not a chance.

It would help if I knew exactly what I was looking for and where but I thought if I could find the blower fan it would be a start.

I completely stripped off the bolt on bits on the dash of a mk3 astra and still couldnt see anything. Had a look under the bonnet and there wasnt any sign there either.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Its under the bonnet on an Astra, below the pastic scuttle cover at the back of the engine bay....its behind the dash on an Omega (hence the confusion)

Remove glovebox and you should see a plug with two screws either side behind where glovebox was.

Unscrew the screws - release the plug and the resistor comes out mounted on the plastic part. Took one out yesterday morning and flogged it - if you had said before hand....

Should be the same part.....same heater etc.

Sorry for being a thiko Marks DTM but is the scuttle cover the bit between the windscreen and engine bay that water drains through?

I couldnt see another plastic cover at the back on the astra I looked at.
