Title: TDC - Can someone confirm

Think i have been really stupid. And wasted a fair bit of time.

Can someone confirm if you need to remove the crank pulley on the v6's to crank the engine round to TDC.

If i remember correctly its 5 bolts around a big torx. Removing the pully is done by removing the 5 bolts.

The huge torx in the middle remains and is used to crank.....

Otherwise m stuffed cos the pulley wont come off  >:(

You will need to remove it to remove the belt when the time comes....

You will need to remove it to remove the belt when the time comes....

yeah i know that TB but short term measure to ensure its all ok timing wise it would work wouldnt it....i can then take it running 1800 meters down the road to my garage owning mate who can air gun or whatever them off.....

 :-/


Mark sked me to crank it 180degrees to check and i cant get the pulley of but i am sat here with a beer thinking i can get access to the torx without removing it...

ok managed to crank it..hard to crank and watch it go exactly to the right spot whilst under the car in the rain and wet....

so its roughly set up to show markings - please note angle of camera may show some bang on and some 1 tooth forward - but they are all 1 tooth forward as mentioned i over shot the mark when cranking....

here is cam 1 and 2

seems okay to me although i am bit concerned with the markings on the outside of belt now its turnd on cams 3 / 4...


unless any one has any reservations i am to put it all back together and turn the key when work allows me the time now...

Not sure if you can see the timing mark for TDC on no. 1 with the pulley on. You would need to line it up with this to ensure the cam timing is correct.

Did you discover why the belt was slack?

Oops! didn't wait for the rest of the post to load. Clearly you have found TDC and, given that you said you overshott a little those markings don't look dangerously out. Don't worry about the markings on the belt. They are for initial fitting only and once the engine has turned over they don't line up again.

Assuming the tension is now OK that should be safe to get you to a garage.

bad angle on camera and light but its there Kevin..

Strangely the only slackness on the belt was to the left of that top idler you can just see....when it was cranked there is  now absolutley no slack at all anywhere... :-/

OK. That's probably not a cause for concern because in certain engine positions the cams are being forced round by the valve springs acting on the cam lobes and this was probably forcing those cam sprockets in opposing directions resulting in the bit of belt between them loosening slightly.

The marks in the cam cover are for guidance.  Have you put the timing bit on from your cam lock kit, which is the one to go by?
