I don't know about the caravan since I don't tow, but in my opinion the update is worthwile by itself.

Maybe others here who have done the update and do tow can help...

What are the advantages of the updated software, I have a 1996 3.0 V6 with auto box and would be intrested in the upgrade

Only 98 onwards are flashable,
Highly recommended upgrade otherwise
Havent towed with either to comment, but get it anyway, it can't make it worse!

makes the changes quicker and smoother - the biggest change I noticed on my gold omega once it was done was the torque convertor lockup, which used to be a accompanied by a bit of a clunk - very noticeable if you accelerated then dropped back down to 60 or so. Afterwards - no clunk whatsoever. You actually needed to watch the rev counter to notice the engine speed drop ...

it also holds onto gears longer in sport mode - changes up literally at the start of the red line - which might also be why people report that the 0-60 time is quicker?

I've heard that it results in less hunting of gears when towing too, but as I don't tow I can't comment on that.

Overall, it's good enough that I'm getting the firmware on my new omega done too - at the local Vx dealer  :-/

Same here. I had my Vx dealer look at the 'clunk' while still under warranty as it did not sound right and definitely wasn't there on my previous 97 Omega, but surprise surprise they 'couldn't fault it Sir'...

A quick trip to TheBoy sorted it though  :y

Its mini facelift onwards that are flashable, so late 97s will qualifty, but 98s that have been sat in dealers before sale, and lease cars etc may not.  If the last letter in the VIN is W or later, thats flashable...  (as is steering wheel audio controls, clear headlights, solid head restraints etc)

I tow with my omega - software update got rid of the tendancy for the box to hunt up and down gears when towing. Now much improved. If you can get it upgraded do so - the whole feel of the box is much improved when towing and also when not towing

Is there any way of looking at the external case of the ECU (Autobox) and telling if it had the later software in from manufacture??   Also what is the version number of the software??

Want to get mine done, hopefully at a meet this year...

The s/w version depends on the ECU.  Yours is likely to be a GS8.20, and would have left the factory with v5 for a 99 car.  v9 is the latest (there does appear to be a v0A floating about, but is not thye regular version in TIS).  At the Brackley cambelt event, I finally found someone with a v8 (thanks Sounds2k :y), so now know that it is between v8 and v9 where the big change is. v9 was never put on to an Omega in the factory.

Took it to local Vx  dealer in Windsor, and upgraded it while I waited  , asked the Guy what version it was before and after and told me, it was at V.1 and is now at V.10; biggest nightmare of all is that the Guy that did it has done a couple of things for me like cruise enable and power sounder followed by the gearbox upgrade ,each time was for the price of a drink, but the bugger has only gone and left the dealership and god knows where he's gone!! probably got caught doing mine on the sly!! and got sacked.
Cheers Pete

it was at V.1
That is odd on a 2.2  :-?

Well, I've towed with the firmware update (not without it though) and it behaved very well indeed. Spent most of the journey at 60 on cruise control. 2200 RPM in 4th. It slipped into 3rd for the hills but was never indecisive. This is with a 300kg glider in a very substantial trailer. No idea what the total weight is but probably not far off a caravan. Bit less frontal area though! 25 MPG average for the journey.
