How can you tell if the water pump is on its way out?
The 3rd cam belt was changed at 10000 miles ago when i bought it, (peace off mind!) but the water pump had'nt been changed,(didnt need doing apparently) that was last changed at 79000 with the 2nd cambelt.
The mileage at present is 101000.
Any ideas
Thanks
Lee

Should be ok after 21k. (Normal consensus is do it every two belt changes ie 80k)
but what prompts your question?

Hi ians
when i started her this morning i got a strange sort of low pitch squealing noise, (its not the fan belt) it only lasted a few minutes, all was ok, it runs fine too,ill keep an eye on it see how it goes.
I just pointed it to the water pump coz it hadnt been changed for a while thats all really!!

alternator bearings maybe?

you've eliminated the aux belt then?
i think its safe to start it up for a short while with the aux belt off which will eliminate its tensioner, alternator, aircon, power steering bearings (it is 2L isn't it - cant see as I type this).

I had a grinding noise when the waterpump decided it was on its last legs and this was promptly sorted at the time a new cambelt kit & waterpump for safety sake.
Secondary air pump usually squeals noise usually comes from in front of the passenger front wheel where the pump is mounted inside the wing behind the horns better viewed from beneath

Waterpump with every cambelt on 2.0/2.2...

My water pump made a great deal of noise when the bearings failed after 116k miles. It was however still turning and doing it's job.

I'll endorse that....

doesnt sound initially lik water pump...pop the belt off by releaseing the aux tensioner - as mentioned above - to see if its the belt firstly.....

Is that because the consequences of failure are considerably greater due to running off the timing belt or some other factor?
I'm interested in this low pitched squeeling noise. I have something similar which has developed on my 2L and which also goes away after a couple of minutes. If this is the secondary air pump, is it a problem?
Cheers

Yes, the risk isn't worth it...
Unplug your air injection, see if it goes away. You will know for sure then...

TB How do we do that on the 2.0?

Its behind the bumper, in front of passenger wheel, above horns. Reach up and unplug.

Thanks TB - will have a look later.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread as my car has been like this for a week or two now. It goes away after it has ticked over for a couple of minutes after start up. Putting the air con on at low revs brings the whistle/screech back. On mine it is definitely not the secondary air pump. It is very, very gradually getting worse i.e. takes longer to go away. the car isn't overheating or losing water. Just as well as it is 34 Deg C here.
If I decide to change the water pump what else do I need to/or is sensible to change at the same time e.g. tensioner, belt? Very approx how much UK money should I budget on parts? The car is a 2.5 auto V6.
thanks, olive

olive, in your case, run car briefly with aux belt removed, see if that cures it?
Remember, on v6, with no aux belt, you have no waterpump, so don't use it like that!

waterpump should be about 25-30 pounds in the UK.
to change it you need to do all of the strip down needed to do the cambelt, so maybe consider doing that if you have access to the locking/timing kit.

Mine sounded like this. No warning just heard the noise as I slowed through traffic

Came home on the back of a tow truck and new Water Pump fitted next day.
