Title: Wheels
Post by: miggy on 14 May 2007, 20:29:47
This is doing my swede in [smiley=angry.gif] cannot get any advice from tyre/alloy dealers all they wanna do is sell me a set of tyres.

I have a set of 18" alloys on the miggy, when I tow the caravan I put on my origional wheels.
My alloys were stored for about 6 months before I put them on a couple of weeks ago, the wheels were put on the car as they came off, took the car out and at 55mph the wheel wobble is a nightmare, I took the wheels for balancing, the fitter put on LOADS of weights to 2 of the wheels. Took the car out and it now wobbles at 65mph, took car back and they say the wheels are balanced correctly and it may be the tyres as they are budgets. I had no trouble before I took them off, ok a slight wobble, but nothing like now, I have had the suspension checked out and it is fine. I dont want to spend £600 plus for a good set of tyres to find it still does the wobble.
Has anyone else expierienced this.

my suggestion would be try a different garage for balancing, pry all the weights off and go somewhere like budget, explain that the wheels were stored for 6 months, tell them you're skint as hell and ask if they'll re-fit the existing tyres if they're still decently roadworthy

also... tighten your wheel nuts :D

cant speak for every garage in every area, but the guys at my local budget garage are brilliant

I have had a problem just like this with a little chinquencento thing. Anyhows, no matter where I took the car the wheels were balanced perfectly and yet I got steering wobble from 35mph upwards. Nobody had a clue what the heck was wrong. Until it struck me that if the tyres had a weakness in the tyrewall then as the wheel rolled the weak wall would give a little more than the rest of the tyre and a wobble would be felt. Replaced all 4 tyres and problem vanished. The car had been sitting for a while and the tyres had weakened where the flex was at the bottom. I dont know how you stored the tyres if anything was resting on them or if you had let the air out, but you could try and swap the front with the rear and see if the problem changes as I dont think you would have a problem with all 4 tyres but if one has a weak spot it will never balance out. Try and change them one at a time with a rear or one of yout towing whels to try and see which tyre is guilty. Hope this helps.
