Title: 2.2i - couple of queries
Post by: omegadan2.2i on 11 May 2007, 22:46:45
After owning my Omega for several months now and being a member of this superb site for the same period, I have been reading (and learning!) about some of the common 'quirks' that these cars have, and also the excellent advice and support from fellow members!!  There is just a couple of queries I have which I am sure you guys can answer!!

1)  The 2.2 has a 'drive by wire' (DBW).  There is an excellent 'how to' section on how to clean out the DBW throttle body etc.  What are the symptoms of this needing cleaning (i.e. poor idling etc)?  What age/mileage should this be cleaned out?

2)  Auto gearbox upgrade - I am aware that an upgrade is available (version 9?) and that 'The Boy' offers an upgrade service for members.  Unfortunately, I live 100+ miles away from TB, so my question is, is this something usually only vx dealers usually do (and how much does this cost) or do some GOOD independent garages provide this service ??

Thanks in advance for your help!! ;D ;D

1) I don't see why the cleaning interval should be any different to the V6, I would say every 20k or so, sticking throttle body could result in occasional high idle.

On another note if you use fuel additive e.g. Forte. STP, or Redex (or - 'superfuels' such as Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate, or Texaco HighOctane, all of which contain detergents) this will also help keep the fuel system and injectors in good shape.

2) Autobox upgrade requires Tech2, so Vx dealer only, cost £50-£100 depending on the dealer's goodwill. TheBoy (and one other person I know of) have privately-owned Tech2 devices, but this is very rare due to the unit cost e.g. £3k+. The advantage of doing it at TheBoy is not just price - but also that it will get done right which is much more important.

I clean my throttle body and breathers out twice a year, it's not a big job, and it keeps the car running smoothly.

Your best bet, regarding the auto box upgrade, is to ask TheBoy if he is going to any of the lads in Nottingham, (MDTM, RMcB, Matchless, LB66) and arrange to meet him then.

It is well worth checking to see if you have the latest auto box software.

I wouldn't trust dealers or independants to touch my car.

Another sign of throttle body wanting to be clean out is seeing oily deposits around the air intake to throttle body joint , its usually the little breather hole in the body that blocked, just use Auto Addicts excellent how-to and you wont go wrong  :y

Thanks for the advice with the DBW, I will give it a good clean within the next few weeks as a matter of course.  Mine has only done 29k and has hardly been touched (hence only low mileage annually) so probably a bit gummed up.

You are absolutely right trusting dealers/independants who 'claim' to know about your car, when in fact they know 's** all'!!  Been there done that!!  (and got several T-shirts to prove!!)

Regarding the autobox upgrade a good suggestion AA I will send The Boy a pm to see if he is coming up to Notts in the near future.

Thanx  ;D

OK, there are a couple of Notts/Derby peeps who need to see me now. Next time I come up, I will publically announce it in the forum if I am going to have time to Tech2 any cars....

For the people like me who have no idea.....................................what is this autobox upgrade?
Whats involved and what are the end results?  :-?
And is it only certain models that this can be performed on?
Cheers Kevin :y

Cleaned out the throttle body and pipes on my mega at 102,000 mile mark. Symptoms i had was oil blowing back into the throttle body. Poor acceleration and pick up. Oil being pushed pass the seal and shorting out the plugs. Now car does not stutter on acceleration and more responsive. Also getting a better miles per gallon which cannot be bad. ;)

Had the software update done to my mega when i recently took it in for M.O.T. Booked the software update at the same time and was only charged for the M.O.T.  :o :oand yes the software was updated as the car now changes up a lot earlier than before and is very smooth. :y

Have read what you have all said about stealer's and will agree but my local knows that i take care with mine and the boys down there do not try to bu**sh*t me. Well they would not as i know where they live. [smiley=evil.gif]
