Title: Red Airbag light.
Post by: rustynail on 19 May 2007, 16:52:36
Hiya all.
I have just joined this wonderfull site.
I bought a 1999 Omega 2.5 Tourer Estate a few weeks ago, and have just had the off side Exhaust gasket done, as it was bowing slightly. However, a few days after i bought the car the battery went flat, so i changed it for anothernew one, getting a right blasting from the alarm in doing so. I have now no problem with flat batteries.
However, i do have a problem with a red light, airbag light i have found out.
It does not go out. Whilst it is acceptable during the daylight, at night it gets a bit waring.
I went to my local Vauxhall Dealer here on the Isle of Wight, they wanted £50 to put the car on the tester to tell me that the light was on!
My question is,
Is there a simple laymans way of putting out the light? without me gifting Vauxhall a lot of dosh?
I await your answers with anticipation.

Not sure on your car whether or not it requires a TechII to turn the light off.

The Boy is your man, he'll be along shortly.

As Auto Addict said, TheBoy will know...

In principal you need a Tech2 device to turn-off the Airbag light - but Tech2s are expensive and only Vx dealerships and TheBoy have them...

There is a cheap £30 device on eBay which can do this but only for the newer models, I think yours being 1999 should be OK though - again TheBoy may be able to confirm.

But unfortunately there is no 'miracle cure' such as short-circuiting two pins on the OBD connector - it's either Tech2 or the cheap eBay device.

And, you will need to read the fault codes and try to find out the reason for the light coming on in the first place, because if you pay Vx to reset it and it then comes on again after a while then you haven't archived much...

And don't be tempted to remove the bulb from the dashboard - it is not good practice to remove any warning bulbs, be it Airbag, ABS, EML, etc....

Or Opel Scanner - mid price.

A code reader capable of reading SRS system required. No other way.  You may need to read why it is on, but I suspect due to your battery issues.

With the airbag light on, these important safety features (airbags and belt pretensioners) are disabled, hence it needs fixing immediately.

Dealers normally charge £45 - £85 +VAT for a Tech2 session, even though it is a 5 minute job.

Whoops! That will teach me to look what I'm doing! Sorry about the previous post.

As i was about to say-

Thanks all for your messages, looks like i'll be expanding Vauxhalls coffers with some dosh after all.
Maybe, next time iiswap batteries I'll be using some jump leads so as to keep a continuous connection!
Thanks again
