On a car with a throttle cable, it will be attached to throttle body.

Throttle position sensor, strictly speaking, I think.

I believe it is a potentiometer, with an arc-shaped track, round which the 'wiper' rotates 'cos it's directly coupled to the butterfly spindle.

I saw one once with it's innards exposed, and it looked really cheap-and-cheerful, as you tend to find with car bits. I think the failure mode/degradation happens where the wiper spends lots of it's time (idle, closed-throttle posn; and then other places depending on how the car is used) it will tend to carve through the resistive material making up the arc. Then it will struggle to give a sensible signal in these regions.

I plan to have a look inside mine tomorrow, if I can get into it reasonably easily, (big bucks for a replacement though).

On the X20XEV engine, I believe it is here:

Had to replace my TPS couple of weeks ago as constant erratice running and idling..fault code came up...went to Vauxhall and for a V6 1998 they wanted over £70=00...after I picked myself up off floor bought second hand off fleabay..well it cost me £8=00 including postage and has cured problem...when I looked at piece it is hard to see where they get their prices from !!on my car it was located on right hand side of throttle body and has a black rubber plug connecter with three wires..took about 5 mins to replace but looking at unit dont see how it could be openend and reaired
