Title: aux belt tensioner
Post by: benjamind on 23 May 2007, 17:47:20
Am i ok just to remove plastic type wheel and replace or do i need to replace the complete tensioner which i have just obtained- appears to be only 2 bolts but access is a pig will need to strip things down a bit to allow full relacement as opposed 1 bolt easy access 10 minute job.

Hello mate

If you have the complete tensioner assembly, then you would benefit from replacing it all. However, it's only the bearings in the wheel that's shot on yours.

Access is with an E14 torx socket, with a SHORT 3/8 drive extension bar - I took this tensioner off when doing your cambelt.

If you just replace the pulley, first remove the Aux belt, and then undo the pulley nut with the old tensioner on the car, replace the pulley with the new one, tighten, and then remove the tension and refit the aux belt (ensuring it sits on all pulleys ok)

You know where I am if you need me :)

Have you got Torx sockets? You won't do this without...

Just fit the pulley, dont bother with the tensioner........and you can buy the pulley on its own by the way

That was my initial advice when I put the car back together, but looking at Ben's first post, it appears he already has the whole tensioner assembly...

So...it only takes 10 mins to change the pulley....much bigger job to do the whole lump!

Change the rest next time you take the inlet ducting etc out...

Could do...

Either way will work Ben, how are you getting along?

My tensioner squealed a bit when I put a new belt on - I didn't like it so put the old belt back on (having discovered it was only 30k old).  Is that likely to be the pulley that needs replacing then?

Obviously i am no mechanic but James and i fitted a new belt to mine and liitle squeaks were heard from the tensioner replaced this and voila squeaks no more.
