On my third tractor , they all drip on the gravel.
Last oil change semi synth it left a large stain overnight in my mates. Checked dipstick, just below min , topped it up with 1.5l duckhams mineral & it stayed full till next chnge now it's leaking again.

No one dare answer mate.
See other oil threads
;D ;D ;D

All 3 of our TD,s run on semisynth and not a drop of *** leaks out of any of them!!!

Generally, mineral oil is thicker, semi synth a little thinner, and fully synth thinner again. Obviously the thinner oils will find leaks.
I would locate and fix the leak, rather than putting in mineral oil.

It's a TD, but I can't see where it's coming from. ( Not Rocker covers).

Yeah, noticed it was a tractor. But its obviously leaking somewhere... ....I know my tractor leaked from sump plug.

Is there much point in using synth if you have to toss it out every 2&1/2 months. 5K Changes .

Personally, I use semi in mine. Virtually all cars designed in last 15yrs have at least semi synth specified.

course there is, mine gets changed every 3000 miles on semisyth as it will protect the moving parts and turbo better than a mineral oil as it doesnt break down so quickly, the sheerslip(where the molecules start to elongate when used hard) is a lot higher on semi and if i notice the difference in the smoothness of the engine after 3000 miles you must really notice it after five!!
-
semi everytime, as i work for an oil producer blending oils for different industries, you will get a better lubricity than mineral oil, it can take far more a battering, and as mentioned, it does not break down as easily.

Ok Ok I hear you. I'll look for the leak . Its not the sump bung. Nose of crank?
My last elite with drippy bung I replaced with "drain plug" but lost the whole lot on a bad yump.
AA paid for TDV6 Disco ., Nice Engine but not as good as a Migg. Shite seats , Worst stereo i'v ever stumbled across. Sump eventually repaired with isopon & jubilee clips.

hi mate, its only a suggestion if your losing oil like that i think i would check the breather system as it seems like its building up pressure possibly in the sump then pushing it out of the seals/gskets,also as a quick check start the engine and remove the dipstick see if you feel pressure or any heavy signs of fumes or smoke emitting from dipstick tube,if it does you no then you have crank case compression building up in sump, and the oil viscosity wont make any differance then, hope it helps you out & good luck, curly

Don't believe the TD's have any cleanable breathers?

Only one I've found is the one from rocker to intake. Mine was clear....

Mine's on Fully Synthetic, does not leak & gets changed every 10K
Has done 128K now & the only problem in 4 years of ownership was the overheating which now appears to have been remedied

The inteval on the BMW 2.5TD engine is 4.5k MAXIMUM :o.

I figured it OK to stretch it to 5k as most of my driving is rural A roads.

But surely, fully synthetic oil is far nore stable & robust that mineral or semi-synth (it should be for the cost) therefore last longer?
Any specialist chemists out there care to comment?

know what your thinking but, on a diesel its not how slippery the oil is although that does come into it,, its how much soot and crap the oil can hold in suspension!! thats why a diesel oil turns black so quickly cos the diesel unlike a petrol makes particules of soot and stuff that is held in the oil till its changed, ergo if you leave the oil change to long you actually have a nice grinding paste in there\ :-*!!!
thats why quite a few TD engines have let a rod go through the side of the block cos the oil wasnt lubricating but actually wearing !!! 4500 is the max time you can leave it before changing according to bmw!!!!

Is it a manual ? What about the german chips on ebay £60.
What mpg
All My auto est's have done 34ish
Computers have said
38, 57, 28, So don't believe em.

Then that suggests that there is no advantage in using synthetic oils (or even semi-synth) in a Diesel if it's going to be thrown so frequently & we may as well use the cheapest mineral type that we can find -doesn't it?

A mineral oil is no good for modern engines.
BMW state 4.5k, and specify semi. Remember, this is the MAXIMUM mileage, and the MINIMUM oil spec. As Omegatoy has said, oil in diesels is used as a cleaner, and hence why diesel oil changes are more frequent than their petrol counterparts.
Using fully synth does not magically extend this service interval, although the oil won't break down as quick (though when it does start to break down, will do so quickly).
Additionally, nobody produces an automotive oil that lasts beyond about 7k (this info now 3yrs old, so may be improvements now), stated service intervals longer than this are based on a ratio of marketing and acceptable accelerated wear. Remember, manufacturers like to stretch the interval as long as possible, hence you hear Vx cry out 20k oil changes. Poppycock.
I would recommend you stick to a maximum of what BMW state, ideally much less. No point using expensive fully synth, stick to what BMW recommend, ie semi. Not that much more expensive than mineral on TC ;)

Got a manual and an auto ;D manual averages about 45 with the chip if i drive it reasoably(unger 90) if im hooning it everywhere drops to about 35/36,
Auto is only used for short journey by swmbo unless i take if anywhere, and averages about 33 on short journeys sby her and 34ish on longer journey only done one journey of 120 miles tho and thats what it worked out to!!
German chips i dodnt know about mate, cos i use our own!!
