I have a manual 2000 TD estate on 98000 miles. Question is do all the manual gearboxes this age and mileage get a little difficult to select 1st gear when cold? Mine is ok when at normal operating temp but can get a little difficult to select 1st when cold. ...It can also be difficult sometimes to select reverse also when cold. No problems at all once car is warming up, gear selection is fine. Clutch seems ok, don't think it's that.

My 2ltr estate has had this for about 40,000 miles. I think its called character as they get older. But is has never got any worse and the car still drives fine.

No experience with manual Omega gearboxes but in general it's not unusual for manual boxes to be a bit notchy until the oil warms up.
It might be worth changing the oil if it has been in there for a while.

Agree with Kev. Change the oil (simple on the manauls) and see how you then find it. :)

Mine's on 170k and doesn't have this problem. Reverse occasionally doesn't fully engage meaning you have to lift the clutch and try again, but most gearboxes do this so it's no big deal.

The manual gearboxes on Omegas aren't the slickest.
Vx changed the oil they used a number of times to improve matters, I suspect they also reduced the oil level too which is why the fill level is 9mm below the inspection hole and not level with it.
To get the best out of the gearbox you need to drain the oil and make sure you flush thoroughly it and fill it with the latest Vx stuff (which I think is synthetic SAE80W).

Hang on though - you say 1st and reverse - that could be a sign of a tiny amount of clutch drag. A reverse pressure bleed of the clutch could be worth a try. (Reverse pressure bleed is the only way to do the clutch.)

Thanks for replies/suggestions. I will look at changing the oil first.
It's takes me back to when I owned a Viva, that's going back some years and the last and only time I owned a Vauxhall. That was a pig to get into 1st gear at anytime, if I remember correctly I had the dealer do some work on the gearbox but it improved it only slightly.
