I'm about to buy one of these (I think several others on here have had them previously).

The Ebay seller doesn't think I need replacement bolts (my engine number is 08300294 - its a 1998 2.5).
Could someone confirm please? I'd rather not have the thing in pieces only to find I do need them.
I believe I need some sealant too. Is the cam cover 'black stuff' ok or should I source something else?
Any other seals etc needed? (I understand the stat comes with its own o-ring seal)

Ask them what make the stat is......the replacement stat from Vx is very good but, requires longer bolts as the casting is highly mdified with ribbing to add extra strength the flange which is also thicker....
If its not the same make as the Vx ones then it might well be able to use the original bolts...but do use some sealent on the seal as they are pretty crap on the old design.
You shoudl also replace the two seals on the coolant bridge pipe....

Were these new improved stats ever fitted to cars originally? (if so, when?)
Regarding the sealant, what should I use and I take it from your reply that it should go around the o-ring as well as on the bolts - can you confirm pls?
do you happen to have the pn for the coolant bridge seals?

You should also replace the two seals on the coolant bridge pipe....
He replied saying it was made by Wahler, and claimed that they supply Vx (and indeed has the Vx part number 90502201 on it). The chap also seemed to think that becuase my engine is later than a certain point that it would be using the newer stat ie the same as this one, and hence the bolts would fit the new one.
He said it had a 5mm thick base plate.
But to further confuse things he said that Vx even later (presumably post production) changed things again and were now quoting pn 24420652 which had a thicker base plate and needed longer bolts.
.. head is starting to hurt.

That explains a few things.
Vx superseeded the part to the later part number....(I bought one a couple of months ago from vx) which I think was introduced on the 2.6/3.2 models....
So they are still supplying the old version then.....which has a crap seal on it so you MUST use sealent with it.

So Mark, in your view is it worth the extra 15-20 quid or so to get the new Vx one (I seem to recall they are something like £39+vat on trade?).

So, despite stating in the advert its a 24420652, its actualy not......naughty seller!
The later style is much superior, very bling and has loads of extra metal in it to make it stronger!

Sorry to resurrect this, but I wonder if someone with access to parts numbers could clarify.
I tried to get 'stat 24420652 from Vx, but they tell me that that part no. is for a later model engine (mine is 2.5 '98)
and that I need 90502201 which they are happy to sell me (so not an obsolete part ). Doesn't come with seal or bolts, both of which I would want to replace anyway.
I don't want to force them to sell me 24420652 only to find it doesn't fit. Then again, for a couple of quid more I would rather have the better part....
So would much appreciate advice from someone who's been here before :y

that seller is fine, that the one i bought and where i bought it.
My two thermostats did have differing numbers. At a push you will need to buy new bolts to connect the stat in place as the ridge is different thickness.
I can post the part number of the bolts should you need once i get home ( or drop me a pm to remind me to look) there only a few pence and i wouldnt use the current bolts as the bottom of them will be swimming ;)

The Vx chap said they didn't do the bolts but if you have a part no. that would be very helpful. (He suggseted just sourcing some stainless bolts M8 x 18mm (sounds short to me))

Part number is 11093601 and obviously you need 2 - there 24p each...
Dont let them fob you off. I took the exact thermostat linked in this thread along with my old one with the 9xxx part number to my vx dealer.
I showed them the difference and they came back with the bolts listed above. No issues on refit.

yep i renewed transfer pipe as well - was about £10....simply to be on the safes sides and it comes with the rubber seal :y
