Title: - Oil Smell
Post by: stuarthurst on 29 May 2007, 23:06:00
Hi

Just a bit of a scarebie now - I've been reading the FAQ's and read about the smell of burning oil.  The fact that it's in the FAQ means that it's a common problem I'm guessing... - I have this sympton so I am also guessing that I have this issue

Q - is there any other reason that I could smell the smell of hot oil? I have no oil leak.  I smell the smell after I get out of the car after about 30 minutes driving but not on motorways.
Q - is this a Vx only job or can I take it to my trusted decent garage?
Q - is this an expensive repair?
I have a 98 Omega 2.5 Tourer

Almost certainly the camcovers leaking a bit of oil onto the exhaust manifolds.
You can try cleaning the breather system throughly, it is often choked up and the resulting excess crankcase pressure escapes via the camcover seals. Usually need to replace the seals though as once they start to leak they just get worse.
Do check in the sparkplug wells, these fill up with oil when the camcovers leak which can ruin the HT leads (v.v. expensive).
You or your local garage should be able to tackle this, just follow the maintainance guide.

Sounds like you got oil in with the plugs.    I replaced a cam cover gasket last weekend, not hard to do, there's a section in the Maintenance guide that tells you how to do this and it's not that expensive don't have the reciept in front of me but it's about £27 ish for the gasket £5 ish for the black sealent, I got more rubber washers and seals as it was the bank holiday weekend i did the job so didn't want to get stuck for parts while the Vx parts dept were shut, all I used was one gasket and some sealent, only one side needed doing, and as I am a firm believer of not fixing what aint broke, one side it was.

I have a burnt oil smell as well, and it is originating from the fact that my dif is leaking a bit and the dif oil gots onto the exhaust pipes. If you can smell the oil a the back of the car it might be this. Worth a check.
