Title: A bit less on
Post by: Abiton on 05 June 2007, 17:59:52
Happy ending for me and my girlfriend's x20xev-powered beauty...

Took it back to the garage that fitted the replacement CTS. Gave them an essay detailing the current problems and recent history. They phoned me a couple of hours later to say "it's gonna be a couple of hours labour for the diagnostics, will that be OK?" I replied, "yep, go ahead" cos TBH it's been doing my head in lately.

Phoned me at about 3 this afternoon to say it's all fixed now, and under warranty!

They said that the CTS they fitted a couple of weeks back must have been faulty. I even argued with them briefly! I said that all I'd asked for was a replacement sensor, and that they'd told me that there was still a fault code showing after this, and did I want them to do further diagnostics? I'd said no, and only this Sunday discovered the root cause of the problem as intermittent shorts between CTS wiring and injector wiring(!). So the sensor they fitted was quite possibly destroyed almost immediately after they fitted it, but may have been fine when it went in.

Anyway, they weren't having any of it, and presented me with a bill for £0.00

Only downside is, after all the investment in time and mental energy (and that of you guys, thanks) I now feel the fairly urgent need to get the cambelt replaced, in order to protect this investment. My best info on the subject suggests it was at least 4 years since the last change...Would you recommend waterpump replacement at the same time? They suggested this as an extra £60 on top of £260 for the belt change.  I'm inclined to say "go for it, please". Is this to be expected at 136 000 miles? Can't see much sense in not doing it TBH, we're hoping to keep the car for some time, as the bodywork etc's all good.

Thanks for reading another of Abiton's essays. Might be online a bit less now. Touch wood.

I would say DEFINITELY do the waterpump although I think £60 is a bit steep.  The pump is around £30 and its no more than an extra 5 minutes to change.   £260 for a 4 pot belt is also a bit steep IMHO.   Its not a difficult job if you want to have a go yourself.

Kind of you to imagine that I could do that job myself. If you saw me trying to work on a car you might change your mind...

When I have what seem like big bills pending on cars, I tend to think of them in terms of how many/few tanks of fuel the numbers equate to, and then think it's a bargain really. (As there's not much we can do about the price of petrol...).

Recently on my 'home' forum someone was complaining about the price of 5 litres of his favourite oil having gone up by a fiver. That's so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. How little do you really expect to pay for decent engine oil? (Haven't bought Vx own-brand 10W40, but will soon, I imagine).

Defo change the waterpump on the 4 pots, as its cambelt driven, hence catastrophic if it fails...

Nic easy job on the 4 pots to do belt and pump - those prices are steep...

Thanks TheBoy, I would have a go myself, were it not for terms like catastrophic!

Whilst my feelings toward this car have improved massively since it started easily and drove me home flawlessly from the Vx place, I'm still thankful that my Golf has a 'safe' engine.

They've been extremely helpful and friendly at this garage, and I'm happy to spend the money to get a car my girlfriend can rely on, and keep for the foreseeable, as she really likes it. It also has a towbar, and we've just this evening bought a little boat!  (The lady that 'fronts' the Service Dept is far from unattractive too...;D)

 :o please don't mention the *** swear word??  ;D

The cambelt on the 2.0 does look easy, even according to the haynes book of lies, gonna have a crack at mine shortly  :-X
Incidently, at my local stealers, they did my last one 3 years ago for £150 just after I got the car, didn't think was too bad really.  :y*

I'm sure a fellow member will be able to assist you with belt change....

*** = OIL.  Starting oil threads is a sure way to get your postcount here knobbled ;)

Trade Club gives you better-than-trade prices on genuine Vx parts. Originally set up for trade only, but some clubs give you access as well

4 pot belt change only takes just over an hour.......with water pump!

So the price you were quoted is a rip off.

Useful info, thanks. Might be shopping around a bit then. I managed to persuade my girlfriend that it is worth doing as a matter of urgency, even though she's already spent more than the purchase price of the car in servicing/MOT costs within the year she's owned it (a good deal of that cash on 4 new tyres, mind). It was also something of a bargain at £750, running well at the time of sale/purchase, (N-reg, v. tidy, 130 000 miles)?

Just got a text message from her saying "fab car!, went like a dream..." and thanking me for being a star. I'd like to pass on much of the thanks to you folk for your kind help and support.

I would get the cambelt, tensioner and water pump doen, make sure its got a 50:50 antifreeze mix in it to.

As for a 'safe' VW engine......it must be an old one then!

16 year-old sweetheart, my engine that is!

Yeah, coolant flush/change is on the to-do list, but I guess if I do get the belt and waterpump professionally done, it would make sense to get them to do this at the same time. Whoever 'them' might be, and at the risk of ratcheting the bill up even more... :'(

you could get the parts from auto vaux i done my water pump, belt, coolant recently and got all the parts from them almost £50 cheaper than main stealer and they were origanol parts, if you live any where near kent i know a good mechanic who knows the 2 ltr engine like the back of his hand, hes done everything on mine recently and its sweet as a nut
