Tic..Tic..Tic when cold, I heard this noise on a V6 2.5 i went to see to purchase the other day. It happened as soon as the engine was statrted from cold, it sounds similar to a very slight exhaust blow. Could this be the EGR system? is it normal ? or is it more likely the manifold. The noise does come from the drivers side of the engine.
The noise disappears once the engine has done its first stage warm up ie- something clicks and the engine revs drop down to normal idle speed then everthing seems to calm down and sound normal.
There are no oil leaks that i can see and the HT leads and DIS pack have both been changed by Vauxhall at the cost of £645 :-?shock,cough......
Opinions please...

It does sound like cracked manifold, typical ; there when cold and gone when warmed up after expansion.

Its not so likely that the manifold is cracked, more likely the gasket has failed....the later metal layered version is much better.

Hi , mine has the same problem but seems to get worse when its been thrashed (2.5 v6cd)
ALso i have noticed that its lost power , mainly mid range torque , would that be the manifold gasket? , if so would i need to replace both of them with it being a v6?

Manifold gasket is a common failure.
Quite hard to fix - but cheap on parts, like £15 a side.
You only need (and will want) to fix the one that is blowing.

drivers side is a pig of a job due to the coolant transfer pipe having an awkward bolt. passenger side is the really challenging one - officially engine out or head off, though apparently can be done almost in situ...

you can do the passengers side in situ, but you need to take the oil dipstick tube out ( at least I did) There isnt enough room to torque all the nuts up though. What i did was to torque up the ones I could then felt what they felt like with a spanner and did the 2 front ones I couldnt get onto with the torque wrench with a spanner to the same as the one I did torque up. I did mine last week

Mine does the same, driver's side also. Is it doing any harm? or can I just leave it and put up with the ticking while cold?

I have this on my Vectra. One of the bolts has sheared holding the manifold on to the engine block....goes quiet after a while as the gaskets warm up. My mechanic advises to leave it as it common for others to shear while they are being loosened to get the manifold off...There after, like the original sheared bolt...they have to be drilled out....not worth the hassle or the expence..well not until the engine totally falls apart at least. ???

When I bought project Elite, it had a manifold blow, on the driver side bank. Unfortunately, one of the studs was snapped. More chance of pigs flying than getting a drill in there.. so decided it was a head-off job. Then decided, silly to do just one head - lets take both off and do a top end rebuild!
When I got the heads off.. there was 1 snapped stud on each bank already, and a further two on each head snapped on removal. So my mate and I had the joyful task of drilling out 6 studs, and then re-tapping the holes! To be honest, though, it was surprisingly easy, just time consuming.
Once manifolds refitted and torqued, they've not blown a bit.
Much to Mark's disgust when he saw it, we used some exhaust paste around the passenger side manifold - AFTER fitting and torquing the gasket whilst dry, I must add. On reflection, a bit un-necessary, and would make it a nightmare to remove in-situ now.. but it sure as heck doesn't blow ;D ;D
