Title: Pug 106
Post by: tunnie on 20 September 2007, 13:57:08
Yes yes, before i get blasted for swaring... its not mine!

Going to look at pug 106's and possibly 206's with someone.

What do i need to look out for on these French POS cars? (she won't drive an Omega, too big)

I assume:

Zorst, normal things?
Are pugs generally belts or are they chain?
any common issues? I know 206 will suffer from poor trim, but as pug goes i think they were quite good.

Price rang is 1.3-2.5K so looking from 1998-2001 era

thanks

Go for a late reg corsa or astra... dont touch a pug with a barge pole i`ve known 2 good friends what had a 106 and 306 both of em where brand spankers they went back to the dealers more times than a drunk to a pub....i like the old shape corsa i had 1 fews years back as a courtesy car and was well impressed as for astras me mates got a astra g and that is a cracking car to drive i`m sure she will like em if you find a nice un... :y

I know they blow HGs but why not a Rover 25/200 - at least they are easy to fix WHEN then go wrong

 :o :o :o

Won't be needing one of those for a while.

Have been trying to steer her in Corsa direction, cause i get trade price on parts. Plus after the Omega should be easy working on.

petrol or diesel.i had a 406 before my omega,i know it's not a 106,but it was brilliant,have to say and i always said i wouldn't have a french car.

Your right.....a 406 is not a 306 or 206 or 307 or 207 or any of the other small pugs.....

The hate them with a passion following a spate of 7 different ones where every single one had a problem from radios not working to the exhaust falling off on the A46......and they all had sub 5K miles on them!

As my father always said about french car (and he used to work for Renault), if you buy french, get the base model.....coz they dont do electrics!

Problem is, once you've driven something like an Omega, or are used to larger cars in general, small hatches always feel awful to drive and feel like they're about to fall apart every time you hit a pot hole.

I did manage to convince SWMBO to go for an MX-5 instead of another Fester last time, and it doesn't seem to have been a bad choice. A bit thirstier than most small cars (low to mid 30's to the gallon) but on the bright side it's much nicer to drive and has only needed a coil pack in 70,000 miles. Correct wheels driven too :y

The size of the boot also puts a handy limit on the amount of shopping possible  ;) (although it's JUST possible to purchase a welder from machine mart while she's in the shops and fit it in the boot) Guess who was mr. popular that day?  [smiley=evil.gif].

Ahh, but no kidy seat, so that's a show stopper.

Maybe you should get a Zafira, Tunnie, just in case?

Its not a 407 either......im getting reports of drivers using 407's getting g/b probs and flywheels.

Worst case i heard of is a driver of a 407 is on his 5th flywheel and 3rd gearbox!

The only 407 that nearly got a good report....was a 3L auto.....tho he sold it coz it drank diesel  ;D

405/406 (both of which I've owned) historically have notchy gearchanges, and poor synchro on 2nd and third...

I know where there is a blue 206 GTi for sale...   ...but I also have had the displeasure of working on them.

French parts are notoriously expensive.

Pick up a decent Rover (yes, Mr DTM, there are such things), with a knackered HG ;).  Or Astra-G?

I take it this public post means Mother and Father Tunnie now know. You dirty little sod ;D - you child snatcher :P

Oh and Congrats on the SWMBO! You kept that quiet!!!

Probably relieved ;D

I know someone who used to be into clothes and his parents thought he batted for the other side - until he eventually got a girl friend

I have heard too many complaints about peugeot..

Astra or a clit (although the parts are expensive) with 1.4 or 1.6 liter will be better I think..

go for a corsa good reliable, cheap on insurance,in one of the lowest groups ins group 2,and cheaper by far for parts, french cars should be sent straight to the scrap yard,my brother works in a m.o.t. garage ,he say the worst cars for failling test ,usually falling on front suspension components,c.v. boots, drive shafts and go through discs like no tomorrow :y :y :y
