Title: Loud ticking/rattling noise on V6
Post by: Sir Gingerlot on 15 June 2007, 12:43:39
Well,
Been driving my newly aquired MV6 around for a couple of weeks. Kept my old 2.0l for a while as a back up. Driving with the windows down the other day and could here a loud ticking / rattling noise when revs go above 1500.(Sound bounce back from walls etc) Can't here it with windows closed. Popped the bonnet and sure enough when engine is reved sounds like the tappetts are rattleing or something around the top of the engine. Has anybody come across a similar noise before. I know its difficult when you cannot here it yourselves. Any advise appreciated.

Could be a few things, with either a sticky hydraulic adjuster (tappet) or a leaking exhaust manifold gasket favourite.

Since you have just got the car, might be worth 3 - 4 k miles or less oil changes to clean out the adjusters.  Extreme cases sometimes add in a flushing additive, but this can sometimes cause more problems than it fixes and generate leaks where there were none previously.....  Accepted wisdom is frequent and early oil and filter changes.

The exhaust manifold gasket is more difficult with the engine in place.  Have a search for exhaust gasket replacement and see what you get....

Do a couple of quick oil changes (ie, every 100m or so). As Hotel21 says, could be exhaust manifold or gasket, but this tends to go once warmed up (unless its been left like that for ages)...
