Hi
Since doing the oil cooler on my 3.0l V6 1997 can not seem to get the coolant system right.
Symptoms:-
Steam coming from expansion cap when closed after 20 mins of driving.
Water in Expansion tank very hot and bubbling like its boiling.
Car is not over heating and driving fine.
Pipes are very hot
Have read various threads and have flushed 4 times water is clear and have run the car up to temp with expansion tank cap off and let water erupt out whilst squeezing pipes to remove any air.
Can anyone offer any advice as at this stage I am thinking its a Head Gasket.

Did you run it up to temp with heater on max heat to give total circulation of the system mine proved troublesome in getting rid of air completely also did you fit new or test stat whilst stripped down.

Yes to the heater on full.
No to the termostat

Is the top hose getting hot before the bottom hose?
-
Will have to check tomorrow what would this indicate?
-
What did you use to remove the horrible gunk from the system?
-
Patience and automatic washing powder

I thought you were cleaning out the cooling system not washing your whites ::)

Andy, Try flushing the system again with rad flush and check the stat to make sure its working properly. If the stat isn't opening/closing then replace it this could be the cause of the problem. Whats proberly happening is that when the coolant is getting hot the stat is opening to allow cold water through thus cooling the water down through the system as well as the fans, if the stat is staying open through out all that is going through is hot water, yes maybe the fans are coming on but ownly cooling down enough to bring the temp down to stop it from boiling over thus still very hot water is bieng permantley pumped around, thats probably why you are getting boiling water in the exspanion tank. Just a theory but I might be wrong, no doubt I will be told if so. And the other thing is DON'T USE WASHING POWDER cause it can block up vital parts for the water to circulate. ::) ::)

Machine Mart traffic film remover (concentrate) is recommended (credit to Marks DTM ;)) as is Forte oil cooler flush.
I ran 4 seperate lots traffic film remover (and thoroughly flushed after each) before I was satisfied the cooling system was cleared after oil cooler failure.

No both bottom one is slightly warmer but only just

Replace the header tank cap, the oil from the cooler gets into the seal and makes it swell and as a result it doesn't seal properly......the result is torrents of water out of the cap.
