Title: coolant loss
Post by: CBH on 02 July 2007, 13:45:38
Hi Guys
Just reading the using coolant topic.
Please can someone explain what the HBV is and what it does.
I have a coolant loss problem but the damp area is on the drives side not the passengers.
It started off with about 1 pint loss every 450 miles now it is about 1 pint every 200 miles.
Have had a good feel around the engine bay but nothing showing.
I think I need to fix this as it is getting worse.

The heater pypass valve sits at the rear of the drivers side (uk cars) engine bay.

Its a simple plastic device with 3 coolant pipes and a small vaccum pipe.

The idea is that if you want max cooling from the aircon system, the valve operates and stops hot coolant circulating through the heater matrix.

Its located at the rear of the drivers side head.....easier to get at with the scuttle cover removed.

...and its an easy enough DIY job and about £25 if bought from correct source.

If its leaking i`d urge you to do it sooner rather than later as often a leaking HBV can in time drip onto and cause problems with dispacks....(Coil pack) and thats a pain to replace  :-/
