v6 2.5 1998 elite..directly below the ICV there is a connector that is surrounded by a rubber casing ..can any body tell me what it is..have found that when car starts running erratic if i push and pull the plug, but not disconnect it, the problem seems to stop..so am keen to know what this is before i start pulling it to bits to see if the wiring is knackered or something else

Cant remember if thats for the passenger bank knock sensor, or the cam sensor.
Is the EML on? Done a paperclip test?

Thanks TB...for last few days car has ran fine after issues with code22 and my replacement of TPS...today after driving over 100 miles engine became erratic and TC light came on ..the display with "autobox "appeared ..pulled over and open bonnet...directly below body of ICV there is a black connector which moves alot but does not seem to be disconnected if that makes sense..like it is in a rubber casing allowing for movement...anyway pushed and pulled connector..restarted engine and TC light was out and all was well again ..running smoothly and no loss of power.drove home over 100 miles with no problems...just wanted to know what it was as will investigate further if just loose wiring etc but if this is a sensor might buy new one and have spare just incase of total failure....ther has been no EML light present and no stored codes in system after "paper clip" test
-
there will be movement in that connector, as the other half of the connector isn't tight in the cable tray.
-
but what does it connect to??

As said in first reply, knock sensor or cam sensor. Both will bring up EML if not working.
-
assuming that the sensor is the problem or stating to give up ..how difficult is it to replace?is it cam sensor or knock as unsure which one you are advising..also if either was at fault would it have registered fault code

cam sensor easy enough, but very reliable on v6. Knock sensor much more difficult. Sensor itself very reliable, though often cable gets damaged between cam cover and head if someone has been careless during cam cover gasket change

Thanks again TB..as no eml and car is running fine most of time suspect wiring as had cam gaskets changed about 8k ago and possible mechanic got wire trapped..is it just a matter of cutting into wire and joining a new section or do i need new sensor with wire attached

If the sensor (or its wiring) is faulty enough to affect the engine running, it will bring on EML and store a code. Personally, I think that connector is a red herring.
When the TC light comes on, is it flashing or solid?
-
EML has not come on as yet with problem?..when TC light comes on it is solid and remains all the time..running then seems rough and when at junctions etc the revs move between 600/1000 rpm and the engine tone is up and down ..occasionaly the display comes up with "check"and shortly after autogearbox appears...as described yesterday unsure if it was by chance but aftre pulling pushing plug engine restarted fine and has run ok since..but am just awaiting it to happen again..although if it can be diagnosed would sooner correct fault if able to

Conincidence I think. Did the speedo go erratic as well?
I think its more likely that you disturbed around the ABS unit that fixed it. The ABS/TC unit provides speed signal to engine and gearbox.

Can you take a pic....
There are two connectors in the area you describe...
One for the 2-4-6 bank knock sensor, the wire for this runs off down to the lower area of the block close to the power steering pump area.
The other goes to the cam sensor on the 2-4-6 bank.
The cam sensor is easy to see and rule out......the knock sensor is a bit harder, the knock sensor cable should not go to close to teh cam cover, if it does, check to see if its been trapped under the cover.
I can see that in theory, the knock sensor being intermittent could possibly cause the TC and autobox to worry as both of these units retard the timing to cut engine power, the autobox during a change point and the TC when things get a bit un-stuck

Will try and photo later as need to go to work...best description I can give of its location is:front n/side.directly below front pipe coming of ICV.looks like it goes under a black cover that has all the breather/vacuum pipes on it.....there is another connector but that is on the right side and that has a definite male and female connector visible....this one just seems to push into a rubber flexible socket......for info speedo has never been abnormal and indicates speed at a steady level
