Title: sudden power loss
Post by: wonderboy on 07 July 2007, 21:41:57
Hi

Recently i experienced a sudden power loss on my omega 2.5 v6 1999. (going up a hill at the time)

I have had the sparks changed but power still hasn't come back. There is also a rocker cover leak on one side - the wells of all three plugs soaked in oil.  :(

Any ideas?

thanks

Yep. Cam cover gaskets, but if the loss of power is great, then I'm afraid your DIS pack may be knackered as well.

Think we need a little more info mate on the loss of power :)

The Cam Cover Gasket is a common problem with the V6 need to be changed with Genuine Vauxhall Gaskets (about £55 for the four) as the other cheapo ones are not as good....

Is your car missing? mine was when the plug wells were full of oil! the plug leads were shot too... not cheap so be prepared :( but Mtek sells them for about £75 less than Vauxhall :y

Expensive. I would do the gaskets and change the leads and plugs first off, then see if it runs OK. Your Dis pack may be fine

I asked out of curiousity at our local Vauxhall Dealer to see how much for them to change the cam covers £298.. the reply was...... the Gaskets are £55 for the four you need and gasket sealer is about £5 if I remember rightly... So do it yourself and save over £200 its not to hard :y

Are the cam cover gaskets/rocker cover the same thing?

Would a plug into a tech 2 machine confirm what exactly is wrong?

thanks

Yes, they are the same thing, more or less. Tech 2 will only give a fault code if there is one stored or EML is lit.

If your plugs wells are full of oil and you have a misfire it is definately the gaskets. Get them seen to ASAP or you will end up with more problems.

If you want to read any fault codes stored yourself, do a paperclip test.

Change the cam cover gaskets (no rockers on modern engines ;)).  If left too long, the hot oil damages the plug leads...
