I'm getting a knocking noise from the right hand front side of my engine looking from the front.
It's a V6 2.5 1999.
The noise disappears when I turn off the air conditioning.
I have noticed the air con is not working as well as it used to, would a re-gass cure the knock as well as making the air colder or is the knock the sign of somehting more terminal?

Sounds like the A/C compressor (or more likely its clutch) - someone else will be able to say if easy fix...

Slip the aux belt off and check for play or roughness in the compressor shaft bearings and pulley bearings. (The pulley has its own bearings, the compressor shaft is connected to the face of the pulley / clutch assy)
I doubt it has anything to do with refrigerant content, if there is enough pressure there to allow the clutch to pull-in then, once the compressor starts, the output pressure goes up so there shouldnt be any on/off cycling of the clutch which might cause a "clack clack" noise.
I suspect the compressor may have an internal problem....get an a/c specialist to take a look and dont use it....if the compressor does fail you dont want metal bits going all through the pipe work etc.

Hi there,
Any knocking noise from the AC when switched on is a good reason not to run it until you have identified the problem - Matchless is spot on with the advice. Its very unlikely to simply be a low refrigerant problem.
Might be worth making sure that fan blades etc are OK and not hitting anything.
