Help please!!
Car has started overheating ie. the temp goes off the scale and the car looses all power. Stop for a couple of minutes and the temp drops to about 95 drive off and have power back temp then goes up again and power drops. This happened after only driving about 3-4 miles. Thought it might have been a sticky stat but can't find it, any ideas where it should be in the 2.5TD BMW engine? Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

Do NOT drive the car if its overheating! The engine is safe to 110C (which is actually 100C on the gauge!!).
I have had no end of cooling issue with my TD, I know every single bloody cooling item on the overated BMW PoS >:(
The stat is on the front of engine - easy to get at. Remove viscous and shroud. Follow the bottom rad hose up, and remove it at the higher end elbow. Remove the plastic elbow (3 10mm bolts - make sure you get right 3, its easy to undo the wrong bolt underneath), stat behind it.
If you need any more info, post up. As I say, I have unfortunatley become very familiar with the cooling system.

Thanks TB I assume it will be ok to drive after removing the stat to check that it is not overheating again untill I can get a replacement one.

you won't get a watertight seal without stat, so remove, and test in boiling water.
you cannot run with no stat (you'll lose all coolant in minutes....

TB Sorry to read about the problems you are having with your own TD.
I can now see where the stat is but can't see how to remove the viscous fan or do I need to remove the rad before this is possible.

TB Sorry to read about the problems you are having with your own TD.
I can now see where the stat is but can't see how to remove the viscous fan or do I need to remove the rad before this is possible.

You need to remove intake plastic bit (with Turbo Diesel on), unscrew viscous from waterpump (32mm, left hand thread, and a bugger if it hasn't been off for a while), then remove the plastic shroud around fan.
I've done it a few times, takes about 2 mins if it goes well, or hours if the fan is a bastard, and you are missing the water pump lock tool.

Temp wise, yes. Coolant pressure wise, no.

Fan came off OK but looks as if the stat is working it opens when placed in boiling water :-/ will replace since I have come this far.
Any ideas what to look at next?

I ment to say as well that there are obviously some bits of the impellor missing I have removed all the parts that I can find so hopefully no other bits will make it back round and cause further problems!! :-/
