When driving from cold the box was hanging in a lower gear. Then it changed but I got a check message'Automatic gearbox'
The car went ok then until I started again in the evening. The message came up and once it got to top gear it refuses to change down.
I can change gears using the lever.
My mechanic cant look at it for 10 days. Will I damage it if I continue to drive it?
Is there something I can do? Please bear in mind it would have to be something simple!

Check and if needsbe change fluid level.
Instructions are in the maintenance section.
Hanging in first gear is normal, it's to speed up heating of the cats and hence reduce emissions.

The oil level is OK but I have some more clues now.
All the LED's beside the gear lever are coming on sporadically.
Does this point to the selector switch? If so how much will it cost and is it easy to replace?

Yes, knackered selector switch. Bloody expensive from dealer (£200?). Come up on ebay occasionally - in fact, one may appear there shortly ::), probably listed at £30 ;)

I would be interested in the switch if you don't want to mess with Ebay.
Is it a difficult job to do? Only I did hear talk about dropping the gearbox!

easy job no need to remove gearbox.

I only asked because if it was a long job I would have gone for a new one but if it isn't it must be worth trying a used one.
