Title: Exhaust ticking

Got new exhaust, cats back. All seems to be ok except the drivers side is still noisier than the other side. There is an obvious ticking from drivers side, up near the manifold.

It is obviously a manifold issue but question is what is the problem, would this problem resonate throughout the system, how much to fix and how easy to do myself? Also as per post on general chat, would a problem with the manifold affect the engine tone?

does the ticking stop or get less intrusive as the engine/manifold warms up?

Seems to stay the same. Saying that I only really listened when it was warm, so could get better or worse, unsure.

ok, the manifold gasket makes this sort of noise but generally stops or quietens down once warm as the manifold expands (unless completly shot!) alternatively could be the manifold itself cracked. Have you had a good look underneath with it jacked up? have a look around the join bettween manifold/engine and look for any tell tale carbon deposits. whilst your there if you get a mate to block the exhast briefly with a large damp cloth it will make any leak/crack easier to identify.

The gasket is common but a pain in the ass, plenty of threads here on the subject. engine out or head off, and thats without the bolts shearing off  :y

Could it be an injector a bit noisey? Mine is bit ticky and when i use the more expensive fuels it does seem to make it a bit less noisey. does the car have any performance issues.? :y

I just had exactly the same sounding problem, the drivers bank exhaust had been replaced from the manifold downpipe back, and it sounded like the actual manifold was buggered, but turned out to be the manifold to downpipe gasket that was failing due to poor alignment, I had this gasket changed twice before I told em it wasnt working, so they removed the pipe and re-aligned it to be a flush connection  :y might be worth checking on yours before you take off the manifold?

Is that the joint before the cat? Hope it is only this gasket. It is hard to hear the sound from above but heard it yesterday when it was in the air from underneath, so this may suggest that it is lower than the manifold  :y

If you cant hear it that well from above then its probably not the manifold gasket, you would know about it its quite loud! Sounds to me more like the manifold to down pipe as luv_my_mv6 suggests. yes its before the cat.

Do places like kwikfit do this gasket? Or is it beyond them. I know they don't do manifolds.
Also what type of gasket is it? Is it the round wire looking one or a flat one?

kwikfit might be able to do this, but i wouldnt trust them to do it right, bunch of cowboys!!! ;)

its a thin wirey one. needs to be aligned properly otherwise it will just keep blowing.

did you try the rag trick? this will show you exactly where the blowing is coming from no matter where along the system the problem is!

Not had a chance to try that yet. Just been out for a run and I have got the roar back, I am smiling while driving again. Still a bit of unwanted noise in cabin but that should go after timing belt and water pump. I'll get the bits and bobs done 1st then I will be able to hear exactly what needs doing next.

If you jack up and support the car on stands on the offending side, climb under the car and follow the exhaust up into the engine, you will see the manifold to downpipe connector situated just where there is not enough room to get your hands up any further. The joint is bolted with 2 bolts that you could try tightening if you have a long enough socket extension bar..... but dont touch the pipe or joint if the engine has been running or just been turned on as it gets scalding hot almost instantly!!!! Either way, if it is this joint, you will hear the noise clearly enough to diagnose that gasket, as said if you could get someone to block the exhaust tailpipes for a couple of seconds it should make things more clearer cos either smoke and or condensation will leak. I took my car once to Kwik-fit (complete waste of time and money - wouldnt recommend them at all) and the second time to vaux masterfit. Although the masterfit centre charged me for a complete exhaust gasket set before they would fix the joint they only charged 20 mins labour. This gasket failed again so I took it back and had a go, so they took the whole section off and fixed it all section by section to ensure proper alignment!
 Just remember.. dont touch the exhaust behind the engine unless you have heat proof gloves  :y Hope this info helps  ;)
