Title: HBV
Post by: ians on 26 July 2007, 21:56:10
Just been looking for a how-to on HBV replacement on a V6...  No joy but found a few posts, some here and on the other place.

One says -'no need to remove anything, just a 15 minute job'.  Suspect he must have fingers like ET ;)

Another says - remove scuttle, trumpets, plenum etc.

Can anyone advise whats really needed to come off to do the job sensibly?

Cheers,

Ian

Just changed mine whilst doing cam cover gasket & cleaning breathers & a few other jonbs to boot.
Made easier by haing plenum , injectore rail & scuttle off.
Biggest pain was due to mine being original part it still had hoses secured by those infernal spring clips. Needsd the addional access in order to get pliers onto clips.
Could imaging that of its been replaced & jubilee clips used instead you may be able to get away with removing scuttle. just remember those 7 plastic clips securing it under the seal at the bottom of the windscreen.  :)

Well, here is my experience. The HBV was my first ever job on the omega so I'm no expert. Like you I saw various posts that seem to contradict. The one that was most accurate was the one that said just remove the scuttle but be prepared for some knuckle rash!
This was how it went for me
remove the wipers (wipers took about an hour to remove and I had to use loads of releasing fluid and tools to prise them up as they hadn't been off for ages - they now come off in 2 minutes!). Remove the scuttle by undoing the half turn screws under the windscreens rubber sealing strip, plus there is a screw on the drivers side. There is a cable clipped under the scuttle that needs unclipping and a couple of rubber seals at each end. The scuttle can then be put to one side on the wing.
You will now have limited access to the HBV from the drivers side. The HBV is clipped on behind the engine in the same way that you clip a front light on a bicycle (check out the replacement HBV), it will be easier if you lift it off the clip next to allow it to come towards you. The task now is to remove the three water pipes and the vacuum tube. This is where you need patience and the plasters for your hands! To get the spring clips to open and move I found that a pair of hose clip pliers from halfrauds made the job much easier than trying to improvise. The whole job took me about 3 hours, but I was moving at super slow speed as it was all new territory.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Pat

Scuttle only for me. Will be fiddly though.  Removing the wiper motor starts to get involved...

Does removing the plenum help on its own or do you still need to remove the wiper motor for that to help?

I'm still at the stage of trying to free off wipers that have been in situ for 9 years >:(

you have almost certainly allready tried this but.

When i was taking of the wipers on mine recently (to get to the powersounder) it was being really stubborn, i found that if you press down on the wiper arm where the spring is whilst rocking the whole arm from side to side it comes of quite easy. im fairly sure they had never been of before and the cars 8yrs old!

sorry if im just stating the obvious, but worked for me :)

yup, pressing down on the hinge point of wiper arm tends to loosen...

I'll try doing that later.

I'm about to order some bits and pieces and was thinking about getting this

http://www.pvrdirect.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?kw=wiper&tier1=Sealey+Tools&tier2=Sealey+Vehicle+Service&tier3=Trim+%26+Screen+Tools&tier7=1&catref=VS807

anyone used one? (I read that the cheaper ones were cr@p)

I've not used one but the design looks good. You're right about the cheap ones ... they're cr@p!  ;D
