Title: broken mv6
Post by: Mole on 27 July 2007, 11:51:43
my car has coughed, spluttered and stopped altogether. it is a 99 ex police mv6. i started it again and all seemed fine for 30 seconds or so then the eml flashed a couple of times whilst the engine spluttered. then the tc light came on as well, it spluttered some more then died. i couldn't get it to start again until i pressed the tc button. the engine fired straight away but only lasted a few seconds when the tc and eml lights flickered and the engine cut out again. i have got fault codes 31 and 73 neither of which point to the tc. can anyone help me

the crankshaft sensor is only about 2000 miles old. it is a genuine vx part from my local main dealer and has the same part number as the one it replaced.

31 normal if engine not running. 73 is MAF iirc (I will double check). Unlikely MAF failed, more likely an air leak.

yup, MAF.  Unlikely to be MAF as said, so look for unmetered air entering engine.

cleaned the MAF with a cotton bud as suggested and it seems to be fine now.

Just a thought, if you have one of the replacement airfilters which are oiled (ie K+N) the oil can contaminate the MAF sensor.
