:'( this car is driving me nuts i am on the virgee of setting it alight!!!
hubby came home today and the first thing he siad to me was " the cars f**ked" Now what,
it wouldnt go into gear? its an auto. (the £ signs are rolling in my head already.)
So went out there and would she get into gear. would she f**k. we eventually got her to get into reverse but it was saying she was in drive. ???? after some gentle persitance she eventually started working again, but now when selected in any of the gears all the lights are on. some times for a couple of seconds other times for mintues.
My mate who works for vx came over to have a look and said there is nowt wrong with the gearbox i asked him about the lights and hes never seen this before? mines the first hes ever seen do this. the gearbox had an oil change at the last service about 4mths ago tops, cant see any leaks.
Is there a chance it could be the selector?( if so how much is it going to cost and where would i get one from? could i change it?)
My hubby is getting sick of this every month its somthing else and i cant keep spending on it, well not at this rate its getting stupid. :'( :'( :'(
Anyone able to help point me in the right direction please.

Hi there Marie
If it’s not in park when the selector is at "P" then it sounds like your selector linkage needs adjusting, if you have a haynes manual its on section 7B.3, picture 3.3. you need to get under the car, so (ALL THE SAFTY PROCIDURES FIRST, before anyone dose) Put the selector in park, handbrake on, go under the car slacken off the clamp bolt on the selector linkage at the lift hand side if the transmission unit, pull the selector lever back so it is in park at the box, retighten up the clamp bolt and see if that sorts it out. If it’s not that then it could be the position switch on the transmission that needs adjusting or replacing.

Sounds like selector switch to me - if the lights are showing wrong selected function, thats first thing to check :)

opps, should have said, its on side of box, passenger side :)

pritty certain its the selector switch on its way out. have sourced another one but its on a 3.0 v6 engine gearbox. does it matter?
how do i take the old one off, i ask for two reasons as the bloke i am getting the new one off does not know where it is and how to take it off....
to top it all off the fault has stopped but still going to get the switch just in case it reappears.

Forgot to say that all selector switches are the same (with the possible exception of the 5 speed one, but never seen one)

Given all the rain / floods recently, have either of you driven through any deep puddles or floods? If so, it may just need drying out. (still would need taking to bits though)

guys my car died on me today.
got her towed to the garage and they have found water in the transmition oil. :'( :'( :'(
They looked at the radiator and all the pipes their was no obvious leak. The plan is to drain her and replace the seals and filters and then put new oil in her. just praying that i havnt done any damage to the gearbox. its costing my @£200 to get it done. the bloke in the garage thinks that it should be fine i dont know what to think.
what do you all think????

I think its yet another poor garage......the transmission oil is cooled by aoil/water heat exchanger in the end of teh rad, if this fails you get water in the transmission oil.
Question is, how do they know there is water in the oil as thre is no sump drain plug and oil floats on water so the water would be at the bottom of the sump?

we emptyed some of the oil andit was a brown colour and didnt feel right it was very watery.
when we took the plug out it poored out the hole needless to say its all over my nice clothes, as i didnt expect to be sat underneath my car again.
is the heat exchanger part of the rad or can i change it on its own? and how would i tell if it has gone?

Dexron III, esp old stuff, does look a little like mixed oil and water.
Also, it is right, if engine not running, for atf to pour out of filler.
