Got this to do and just had a quick look under the bonnet while I wait for them to arrive.
Q: Is it easier to remove the battery or the headlight unit in order to get access to the L/H Bulb?

if your hands aint the size of dinner plates i find it easier to loosen battery clamp & move it away from headlight as far as poss, this may give you just enough room. Removing the headlight is not major surgery if you want to go that route ;)

Hands are not the size of dinner plates but not childlike small.
Looking from above I can only see one torx bolt holding the balast on - am assuming there's a few more hidden around?

Easy enough to do, no external removal needed...
Remove Airbox / Battery depending on side (both recommended for colour matching)
3 torx screws to access the bulbs.

Not sure why you would need to do both, especially at the cost of these bulbs :o
But then again ive never had to replace any of my hids, so what do i know

Bulbs, dear at retail, but i've just had one blow, got a pair for £42 from ebay.
As for changing both...
These lamps have a 3000h life, their brightness decreases over time.
Elite Pete lent me an old bulb of his, as mine failed just before MOT, and I both wasnt sure it was deffo the bulb, and didnt have time to buy new bulbs from a cheaper source (vauxhall want £70+ per bulb)
I Install Pete's other old bulb, completely different light output to my other one, made the headlight effect very lopsided, I couldnt have lived with this!
My new set arrived, I had ordered 6000k colour bulbs (original are 4300K, a slightly yellower colour), put the 1st one in (replaceing pete's) so I now have 1 very new, 1 very old and the difference was probably enough to fail an mot, yes similar light output is a requirement!
Replaced the other as well, and holy sh1te, what a difference, so much brighter!

If I remove the battery fully (facelift car), are there any issues with any critical configuration being "lost"? e.g. key coding etc.
Not worried about dash OBC losing consumption records etc, or radio codes.

Mine was prefacelift, but should be the same
Just radio codes and MID figures will go
Remember to remove battery within 15 seconds of turning off ignition else you may have the alarm go off.

Mine is a facelift, and I had to change the small bulbs so I had to remove the battery completely. In addition I had to change my battery 3 days ago. Beside the radio code and the consumption figure I had no problem. You will need to reprogram the electric windows as well, but that's all.

OK. Bulbs turned up yesterday and fitted this morning.
Battery side is a bit of a mare as you can't see exactly where the bottom screw is.
No need to remove headlight unit.
Bulbs I removed had the following printed on them
Osram Xenarc
D2S 35W 66040
Germany
Once power was restored, all kicked in OK. As already mentioned, OBC values (Date, Time, Consumption etc) were lost and electric windows no longer did auto-open or autoclose.
Date/Time easily fixed using dash controls
Electric windows reset by continuing to hold down each window switch for 5-10 seconds after the window is fully closed.
