Title: Engine Sound On Startup
Post by: madslug on 19 July 2007, 21:59:38
I'm sure Im paranoid... So I've had the Elite for a week now and every little ratle or noise worries me.
Anyway...
When I first start the car I get a noise coming from under the bonnet that sounds like some sort of pump spinning or an electrical motor of some sort after about 30 seconds it stops. Any Ideas??????????????

Secondary Air Injection (SAI). Normal. If it pisses you off, disconnect the connection to pump, which is in front of the nsf wheel.

Is it normal then? If I disconnect what happens?

It squirts air into the exhausts, to make the cats come up to temperature quicker.

If it's front right wing area, it could even be the ride level suspension pump!!!!!

Pulled up next to another Elite at the petrol station yesterday, bloke came out turned the key and it didn't make the same noise as mine. How can I resolve this once and for all.

Pull the plug as already stated. If car is already warm then the pump doesn't run anyway because the cats are already hot.,

Mine makes this sound whether it's hot or not. Its the first time I turn the key, then goes after about 20-30 seconds.

Any particular page of the Haynes manual.

Page 4B*4 Picture 6.4a

Sections 4A and 4B are the most used sections in my copy.  ;)

I've nearly wore the print out.  ::)

If it only runs for 30secs why worry about it, vx put it there to do a job, all be it one that does not APPEAR to do much.Myself i would leave it well alone unless it is making one hell of a racket, then if you cant be botherd to fix it then disconnect the sac. ::)

OK guys, I've found this metal unit in front of the NSF wheel... It has rubber hoses coming from it, right???

Is there a simple electrical connector that I can disconnect or a fuse I can pull??

Ta   ;)

Mine is exactly the same - sounds like a jet engine every time I start the car.  I was told before on here that you normally cant really hear it running - mine sounds like a jet engine cos the bearings in it are probably knackered.  Also the vacuum control valve that is part of the plumbing of mine is broken which may be part of the reason mine comes on for 30 seconds every time the engine is started and not just when it's needed.  Can't really remember.

I left it connected cos it sounds cool :D.   Always turns a head or two when I start up, and if anyone asks it's the jet assist unit blah blah etc etc.  Sad i know...

I just want to know where the connector is.....  :-/
Can I get to it easily?  :'(
Is it in the engine bay?  :(
Is it even visible?  :-?

Sorry guys Im NOT a mechanic and have no idea about cars, I just drive an Omega  :-[

I would have thought you could unplug it at the pump itself.  Look for a plastic connector on the back/side of the pump unit.  Will probably need to jack up that corner so you can slide your head under and have a look possibly with a torch.

And since you're not a mechanic and it may not occur to you, I'd add the advice of never relying on a jack alone to even look under a car.  I've seen them fail.  Support with an axle stand.

Leave it alone bud....Its doing what VX designed it for.

If you unplugged/disconnected and removed everything and anything that pissed you off at one time or another you'd be stuck sitting on the road on nothing but yer car seat......and even that will piss you off eventually...

Sorry !  But this is a silly post.

No damage will occur to engine by disconnecting the SAI pump....
