Title: The WORST job in the world????
Post by: a2reed on 10 August 2007, 09:59:12
Has anyone changed the dispak...it seems impossible to to get to ...I have been told by a garage that that the car needs to be up in the air and can't be done at the roadside

It seems that the whole of one bank of the V6 needs to be removed to get to it...or is there any trick?

I don't have a garage so have to do it in the road outside....I have been quoted £190 plus parts to do the work is it worth it or can I do it myself?

Your garage is talking nonsense. Car can be where ever - as long as its dry.

This can be done with perseverance and slim hands / proper tools, by you !!

Need to strip the skuttle and possible the plenum ( engine top) and mark everything you remove. Dispack access at back right hand side of engine as you look at it. You do NOT need to remove either bank  :-?

£190 is outragous, its also a circa £80 - £120 part at trade price dependant on car.

Do it yourself - we can assist if you get stuck  :y and yes plenty, including myslf, have done it.

Recently I had the plenum off (and scuttle) and the injector cage out and even then I could only just see the thing never mind get to it...how the heck do you get to the torx screws to get it out ?...there is absolutely no room whatsoever...do I need to put it on ramps first?

Changed one a couple of nights back.
Remove the wipers and scuttle.
undo servo vac pipe from plennum and move it as far forwards as poss.
move vac pipes and breather pipes out of the way
may help to un plug the injector cable (big connector around coil area)
Unplug LT connector
Unplug HT leads and lay to one side...pass. bank ones are short so wont move completely out of the way
Undo the 4 bolts using a 1/4" drive 8mm socket.....your torx sockets are likely to be too big and will get stuck
When free you might be able to get the coil out between wiper motor but if not then slide it along behind breathers etc and out by servo.
Replacement is the reverse as they say, use the old coil to identify cyl Nos when replacing the HT leads (leads have numbered ident rings and coil has numbers in moulding.

Takes about 20 mins to do, dont force anything or flex the HT leads too much.

No leave it 4 wheels down, theres no need to be underneath - although vx aparently say its gotten from underneath.Trust me wiggle your hands down ( follow one of the ignition leads to make sure you get to it) Obviously disconnect battery as well.

Its done by touch rather than sight - so you wont see it. You need a very compact ratched with 3" and 5" extensions for the 4 torx bolts. It is fiddly but doable.

Dont be paying £200 for a job plus parts that you can do in a day easy.

And ....... of course you'll need a large box of plasters for when you finished!! ;D  ;D  ;D
As Markie says it's all done by touch/feel.

Yep there are 3 different dispacks. One for early, middle and late omegas...its best to remove your old one and quote part number  :y

What sort of prices were they quoting? they may not be the cheapest.

It will be one of two as given the age of your car, it wont be the early vertical one.

If you pop the scuttle off you should be able to see the DIS pack, pop the LT plug off and look at the shape of it.....thats the give away on which one it is.

75 + vat. 91 + vat and 91 +vat...I have a trade club card and I notice at Vx there are 4 models of dispak ...the last and cheapest for the 2.6/3.2 V6...as it happens every time I have been in this situation before my 2.5 has always used the 2.6/3.2 parts...can anyone tell me from the EPC?

BTW where may be cheaper?

Its one of these two....the later 2.6/3.2 are coil per plug so much cheaper (coz they only do 3 cylinders):

Rectangular connector (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-PACK-VAUXHALL-VECTRA-OMEGA-2-5-3-0-V6-DIS-UNIT_W0QQitemZ150149003059QQihZ005QQcategoryZ10404QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

or

Oval connector (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-PACK-VAUXHALL-OMEGA-2-5-3-0-V6-DIS-UNIT-NEW_W0QQitemZ150149031416QQihZ005QQcategoryZ10404QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

it can do....i wouldnt drive unless really really needed...

How do you know its dispack? have tou checked plug wells for oil, checked leads for damage? It can and probably is a dispack if you have a misfire, however checking other factors first is cheaper and quicker...

No I haven't checked the leads .... I do have a multimater... the reason I thought Dispak was because it went suddenly while driving ...however having said that there is a bit of oil in one of the plug wells so now I am unsure.... are you thinking crankcase leak?

Not advisable to drive it in this condition as unburnt fuel will be getting into the cats and burning there and damaging them.

Good luck with the swap out of the DIS!

Sorry, only just seen this - replied to your earlier comment while on page 1!!

If it is the oil that is causing the misfire, you will need new HT leads rather than the DIS pack.

It will be a rocker gasket leak rather than crankcase leak.  Sounds like you have the beginning of rocker gasket failure.  There is a guide on here how to change them - look in the Maintenance Guides section.  When doing this make sure that the breathers are clear, again there is another maintenance guide.  Hope this helps.

thinking new rocker gaskets then, clean up leads and replace both gaskts - vx own ones only.

If left to long you may need new leads - and also dispack.

But do the simple things first.

How much for 2 rocker cover gaskets - might as well do them anyway as I will be removing half the engine to get to the dispack!

And which HT leads to go for ...will do it all in one go

Rocker gaskets, only use genuine GM.

About £50 ish for both sets and the 16 o rings...

Dealer. Despite what autovaux claim, they do NOT supply genuine cam gaskets.  Pattern cam gaskets seem to be problematic.

Don't forget, whatever dealer says, it is the black sealant required, as per the Maintence Guide here...

Genuine leads are bloody dear. Cheaper to get the better magnecor ones from user here, Mtek, seem to recall around the £100 mark...

Thanks chaps for all your help

I have decided to go for the full works on Monday .... I need the car to be good for several months ahead without being off road so I am going to do the rocker gaskets, new HT leads and ( I can hardly wait!!!) the dispak all in one go ...

I noticed there is no "how to " on the dispak despite it being much talked about so might look into doing one if I can (time permitting) - you never know it might get my status promoted!!!!

Anyway will be back ( I am sure ) on Monday saying "WHY DID THEY DO THAT!!!? "

I am sure a few of you will know what i mean

Thanks again

sure you will be fine - just post back when / if you have any questions. No such thing as a daft question, just daft not to ask  ;)
